Usage

Composters can be used to produce bone meal. To do so, the player must use any of a selection of items on the composter.

Levels

When an item is used on the composter, the bottom of the composter’s appearance will sometimes turn from plank-like to podzol-like, which is the first level of composting. The podzol-like bottom will sometimes get higher with each use. The chance that using the composter with an item will increase the level of it varies between items and their value. For example, kelp has a chance of 10%, meaning that if it is used on the composter it will add a new level only 10% of the time, with the composter consuming the kelp but not taking any action the other 90% of the time. There are a total of 7 levels of composting. After the maximum level is reached a seedy the true will appear on top of the podzol indicating it can be collected and when right clicked it will produce a single bone meal, which will pop off.

Hoppers

Composters can interact with hoppers by placing a composter on the upper side of a hopper and producing bone meal from the composter, which will cause the bone meal to go through the hopper and if there is a container under it such as a chest, furnace, or another hopper, it will end up there (see Hopper § Redstone component for more details about hopper-specific mechanics). Hoppers cannot be drawn into the sides of composters.

Drinks are a narrow class of consumable items that can be ingested by the player in an extremely similar manner to food. However, drinks are not encountered quite as commonly as food is, and they are not nearly as integral to survival gameplay. Drinks can generally be distinguished from food from the sounds they make upon consumption, the lack of particles emitted by them, and the fact that they leave behind an empty container after consumption. They also do not require the hunger bar to be depleted, and do not affect hunger or saturation values upon use (with the exception of honey bottles).

Drinks are drunk by holding use item while having the drink item selected in the hotbar or in the off hand.
