Usage
Composters can be used to produce bone meal. To do so, the player must use any of a selection of items on the composter.
When an item is used on the composter, the bottom of the composter's appearance will sometimes turn from plank-like to podzol-like, which is the first level of composting; other times it may take several uses to get to this first level. The podzol-like bottom will sometimes get higher with each use. The chance that using the composter with an item will increase the level of it varies between items; for example, kelp has a chance of 10%, meaning that if it is used on the composter it will add a new level only 10% of the time, with the composter consuming the kelp but not taking any action the other 90% of the time. There are a total of 7 levels of composting. If the player uses the composter at its highest level, it will produce a single bone meal, which will appear as an item entity.
Composters can interact with hoppers by placing a composter on the upper side of a hopper and producing bone meal from the composter, which will cause the bone meal to go through the hopper and if there is a container under it such as a chest, furnace, or another hopper, it will end up there (see Hopper § Redstone component for more details about hopper-specific mechanics).
List
The following shows the items that can be used in a composter, as well as the percent chance of adding a level in the composter per use:
- 10% chance: all saplings, all leaves, all types of seeds (except nether wart), (sea) grass, sweet berries, and (dried) kelp.
- 20% chance: dried kelp blocks, tall grass, sugar cane, cactus, vines, and melon slices.
- 50% chance: wheat, lily pads, melons, sea pickles, pumpkins, apples, potatoes, beetroots, carrots, cocoa beans, all mushrooms, mushroom stem blocks (not mushroom blocks), all ferns, and all (tall) flowers.
- 80% chance: hay blocks, bread, cookies, and baked potatoes.
- 100% chance: cake and pumpkin pie.

A melon slice is a food item that can be eaten by the player.
Obtaining
Block loot
Melon slices can be obtained by breaking (harvesting) melons using any tool or by hand. Axes, followed by swords, are the fastest tools for harvesting melons. A melon drops 3–7 melon slices, when broken; by hand, using a tool, or after being broken by the movement of a piston, with an average of 4.64 slices per melon.
Breaking a melon with a tool enchanted with Fortune increases the potential number of drops by 1 slice per level, up to a maximum of 9 slices.

Charcoal is an item obtained by smelting logs or wood. It is used as fuel, or for crafting torches and campfires. Unlike coal, charcoal cannot be traded with villagers or crafted into a block of coal. Coal and charcoal also cannot stack together. It can be used as a substitute for coal, as both charcoal and coal have an equivalent duration when smelted.

Fuel
When used in a furnace as a fuel, a piece of charcoal lasts 80 seconds (smelting up to 8 items), the same as coal. Charcoal used as fuel lasts more than 5 times longer than wood planks or wood logs used as fuel, being more efficient than any other use of wood for smelting in Java Edition, but outstripped by wooden slabs in Bedrock.
Coal and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by furnace minecarts. They provide approximately four minutes of transit each.
