The chunk updates readout

Chunk updates is the readout for the number of 1-block spaces which have changed state or content in the last second. This change in state can be caused by the addition or subtraction of blocks from the map, or the rapid filling of a space with a liquid.

Chunk updates can be high right after Map generation, or if a griefer is flooding an underground base in Classic.

Chunk updates could be viewed directly on-screen since Classic. From Alpha onwards, debug tools are hidden by default and the chunk updates readout can be viewed by pressing F3. Also, low FPS is also caused by the game updating new chunks, same as autosaving every 2 seconds.

Examples

  • Sand, gravel, and other gravity-obeying blocks will not fall if generated over an empty block when the game starts, but if any block touching it is moved, destroyed or placed, it will update and fall.
  • The same is for water and lava. Sometimes a wall of liquid will be generated if a cave entrance or crevice is right beside a lake or ocean.
  • Mushrooms generated under trees where the light level is too bright will sometimes break when a block next to it is changed.
