Chunk

A chunk is a 256 block tall 16×16 segment of a Minecraft world. Chunks are the method used by the world generator to divide maps into manageable pieces.

Generation

Chunks are 16 blocks wide, 16 blocks long, and 256 blocks high, which is 65,536 blocks total. Chunks are generated around players when they first enter the world. As they wander around the world, new chunks are generated as needed.

Chunks are generated with the help of the map seed, which means that the chunks are always the same if you would use the same seed again, as long as the map generator and version number remain the same.

Chunk loading

Since Minecraft worlds are "infinite" and contain an extreme amount of chunks, the game loads only certain chunks in order to make the game playable.

Unloaded chunks are unprocessed by the game and do not process any of the game aspects.

Java Edition

Tickets

Loading starts when chunk receives ticket. All loaded chunks originate from ticket.

Each load ticket has 3 properties: Level, Ticket type and (optionally) Time to Live.

Level and load type

Levels are numbers that determine what load type the chunk is.

Load levels range from 22 to 44 in regular gameplay while only 22 to 33 are relevant. Technically, lower load levels than 22 are possible (but not without a modded game). Load levels above 44 are not possible.

For a given chunk, only its lowest-level ticket matters. (Lower levels = higher load type.)

Not all loaded chunks have the same properties and are divided into 4 load types. This excludes unloaded chunks.

Load Type Level Properties
Entity Ticking 31 and below All game aspects are active.
Ticking 32 All game aspects are active except that entities are not processed (do not move, spawn, despawn, etc.).
Border 33 Only some game aspects are active (redstone and command blocks do not work).
Inaccessible 34 and above No game aspects are active, but world generation still occurs.

Level propagation

Load levels "propagate" or flow from source chunk with ticket to neighboring chunks, but each time it increases its level by 1 until the maximum of 44 is reached.

The chunks that get load level from level expansion activate the assigned load type.

Ticket types

Different ticket types from different sources to activate chunks with different load levels.

Player ticket

Ticket created by player. It has a level of 31 so its propagation can be seen in the table above. And this ticket is given to each chunk that is in the player´s chunk loading distance.

  • Player's chunk loading distance:
  • Player's chunk loading distance is a square.
  • In single-player, "Render Distance" in options affects the side length of a square, side length = Render Distance × 2 + 1.
  • In multiplayer, "view-distance" in server.properties affects the side length of a square, side length = view-distance × 2 + 1.
  • For example, when "Render Distance" is 5 chunks, an area of 11 × 11 is Entity Ticking chunks, and the outskirts of 12 × 12 chunks are Ticking chunks, the outskirts of 13 × 13 chunks are Border chunks.
Forced ticket

Ticket created by using the forceload command. It has level of 31 so its propagation can be seen in the table above.

Chunks remain forceloaded even after closing and opening the game.

Spawn chunks range

Propagation of start ticket

Ticket created by the world spawn for the chunk it is located at ("spawn chunks"). Its position can be changed by a /setworldspawn command. It has a level of 22, the lowest in the game. They are active whenever the player is in the overworld and are otherwise permanently active.

Portal ticket

Ticket created when an entity is teleported through nether portal, given to chunk at the other side of the portal. It has a level of 30, so it is stronger than player/forceloaded ticket.

It expires after 300 game ticks (without lag equivalent to 15 seconds). Because they are created each time an entity passes through the portal, it is possible to create "chunk loader", but it can create lag.

Dragon ticket

Ticket created at the start of the battle with ender dragon and is given to the 0,0 chunk (the one with exit portal). It has level of 24.

It expires after no more players participate in the battle or the dragon dies.

Post-teleport ticket

Ticket created when entity is teleported either by going through the end portal and using teleport or spreadplayers commands. For the teleport command, it has level of 32 whereas for the spreadplayers and end portal it has level of 33.

It expires after 5 game ticks.

Temporary ticket[more information needed]

Ticket created when an arbitrary piece of game code calls "getChunk". If the game code says the chunk should be loaded, it places this ticket on that chunk (after possibly creating it).

The load level depends on what kind of chunk the game attempts to load (a fully world-generated chunk or not). It is at least 33 (border), but in many cases, it could beyond 33, which involves world-generation in some way.

As an example, when generic mob wandering AI is executing, it asks if a certain block has a solid top surface. As part of that check, that chunk has an "unknown" ticket with level 33 placed on it.

It expires after 1 game tick.

Light ticket[more information needed]

Unknown, possibly world-generation related.

Limitations

  • Idle timeout
Each dimension has its own idle timeout. If there are players or forceloaded chunks in the dimension, the timeout is disabled. When entity leaves or enters this dimension, the timeout is reset.
If the timeout reaches 300 game ticks, the dimension stops processing certain actions. These include entity processing, ender dragon fight, and global entities (lightning and weather[more information needed]).
  • Some game aspects don't always get processed in loading chunks because there may be other conditions for their progress, which includes the following:
    • Chunk tick
      • Only chunks with centers within 128 blocks of a player are ticked on every game tick. See also Tick.
    • Entities
      • Hostile mobs instantly despawn if they spawn more than 128 blocks from any player.
      • Passive mobs do not spawn naturally outside a 240 block X 240 block area around a player.
        • The passive mob spawn cap is limited by the number of friendly mobs loaded into memory, which means that any passive mobs present in the spawn chunks count toward the mob cap and usually prevents friendly mobs from naturally spawning anywhere else in the world. The only exception is when passive mobs spawn as part of a newly generated chunk.

Exceptions

Events in a chunk may affect blocks in outside chunks. If the outside chunk is inactive the effects are suspended in most cases. Specifically,

  • Block changing on the edge of a ticking chunk can spread updates to blocks outside the ticking chunk and make them respond appropriately. The update may be propagated block by block until outside the border chunks, at which time it creates a temporary ticket to continue propagation.
  • Block in a chunk with a 33-level ticket can request a scheduled tick, but it does not be processed until the chunk gets a ticket on level 32 or below.
  • Flowing water or lava can spread to the first adjacent block outside a ticking chunk, but the flow becomes suspended there until the border chunk has a ticket on a greater level.
  • Fire can spread to the first adjacent flammable block outside the ticking chunk. Like water and lava, it becomes suspended there. It cannot spread further until the outside chunk gets a ticket with a level of 30 or below.
  • Grass and mycelium can spread to the first adjacent block outsider an entity ticking chunk.
  • Pumpkin and melon stems growing on the edge of an entity ticking chunk can place their fruits on an adjacent block outside an entity ticking chunk.
  • An entity (mob, minecart, arrow, etc.) that attempts to move into a ticking chunk from an entity ticking chunk becomes suspended as soon as it leaves the entity ticking chunk. When the ticking chunk gets a ticket on a greater level, the entity resumes moving.
  • Exploding TNT in entity ticking chunk can damage or destroy blocks in a non-entity-ticking chunk.

Bedrock Edition

All game aspects are active in loading chunks, including chunks within the simulation distance of a player and chunks loaded by Commands/tickingarea. Unloaded chunks are unprocessed by the game and do not process any of the game aspects.

  • Entities
    • Mob spawning is evaluated for every chunk within a 6 chunk cylindrical radius of the player that is loaded.

Exception

Events in a ticking area may affect blocks in outside chunks. If the outside chunk is inactive the effects are suspended in most cases. Specifically,

  • Block changing on the edge of a ticking area can spread updates to blocks outside ticking area and make them respond appropriately.
  • Flowing water or lava can spread to the first adjacent block in an outside chunk, but the flow becomes suspended there until the outside chunk becomes active.
  • Fire can spread to the first adjacent flammable block outside the ticking area. Like water and lava, it becomes suspended there; although visible, its animation does not run and it cannot spread further until the outside chunk becomes active.
  • Grass and mycelium can spread to the first adjacent block in an outside chunk, but the affected block does not actually change its appearance until its chunk becomes active; it then changes instantly. Grass and mycelium cannot spread beyond the first such block, nor from such a block into the ticking area until the outside chunk becomes active.
  • Pumpkin and melon stems growing on the edge of a ticking area can place their fruits on an adjacent block in an outside chunk.
  • An entity (mob, minecart, arrow, etc.) that attempts to move into an outside chunk becomes suspended as soon as it leaves the ticking area. It remains visible but motionless. When the outside block becomes active, the entity resumes moving.
  • Exploding TNT can damage or destroy blocks in an inactive chunk, and unlike other events, its effects are not limited to adjacent blocks. However, secondary effects in the outside chunk are suspended until the chunk becomes active. For instance, if an explosion destroys a block that supported sand or gravel, the sand or gravel does not fall immediately. The same thing happens with items that were attached to destroyed blocks, such as item frames and redstone torches; they do not drop until the chunk is activated.
  • Primed TNT that has been launched into an inactive chunk is suspended in mid-air within the first outside block it enters. It disappears until the outside chunk becomes active, at which time it resumes its flight and countdown.

Finding chunk edges

Chunkf32

X and Z coordinates that are divisible by 16 represent the boundaries between chunks. EG: (96, -32) is a corner where four chunks meet. One of those chunks is between X coordinates 80 to 96 and Z coordinates -48 to -32. Another one is between X coordinates 96 to 112 and Z coordinates -32 to -16, and so on. When either X or Z crosses a multiple of 16, the player is moving across chunks.

Essentially, the player is in the top-left corner (north-western) of a chunk when both x and z coordinates are divisible by 16.

Additionally, the player can know the chunk they are on by this formula:
The X of a chunk is Floor ( X coordinate / 16 )
The Z of a chunk is Floor ( Z coordinate/ 16 )
Where Floor is the largest previous integer. E.g. Floor( 27.9561 ) is 27
In other words if X was 27, Z was -15 the chunk is chunk ( Floor( 27 / 16 ), Floor( -15 / 16 ) ), meaning that the player is on chunk (1, -1)
Also, The player can know how far he is from the north-western corner by this formula:
(X or Z coordinate) AND 15

In Java Edition, the key F3 + G can be used to display chunk boundaries. Alternately, pressing the "F3" button opens the Debug screen that shows the player's X, Y, and Z coordinates, in addition to the "chunk" variable. These coordinates change as the player moves around. The player can know the chunk they are in by the variable "chunk".

In Bedrock Edition, when toggling fancy graphics, the world renders again, loading only the chunk the player is in for a split second, briefly showing the chunk boundaries. When the player changes the render distance rapidly, chunk barriers appear as a blue line.

Slime chunks

Java Edition

Slime chunks are specific chunks capable of spawning slimes below Y=40 regardless of Light. These chunks are otherwise same as all other chunks.

Slime chunks generate throughout the world (except in mushroom islands). 1 in 10 of all chunks is slime chunk. These slime chunks are determined pseudo-randomly by combining their chunk coordinates with the seed of the world:

That is, using the chunk coordinates to help generate a seed, a random number between 0 and 9 inclusive is generated, and if that number is 0, the chunk can spawn slimes. To convert world coordinates to chunk coordinates, divide by 16 and round down. Note that xPosition, and zPosition are 32-bit integers (ints).

Bedrock Edition

The slime chunk algorithm in Bedrock Edition is different from in Java Edition. The algorithm doesn't depend on the world seed, thus the chunks that slimes can naturally spawn in are the same for every world.[1]

== Appearance ==

Items have two possible appearances, generally corresponding to whether the item appears as a 3D or 2D shape in a player's inventory screens. 3D items appear as their 3D shape, miniaturized to about {{frac|1|4}} scale, while 2D items appear as {{frac|1|2}} scale with all the pixels extruded into a cube. Both types slowly rotate and bob up and down; this is merely a visual effect, the item itself does not actually rotate or bob up and down.

Item entities that represent a stack of more than one item appear as several items stuck together. Stacks of 1 appear as one item, 2-16 as two items, 17–32 as three, 33-48 as four, and 49+ as five.

The rotation rate of the item is approximately 2.87675 degrees per tick, or 57.595 degrees per second.

== Behavior ==

Item entities come from many sources. Some common ones are:
* The death of a [[mob]] or [[player]].
* A [[block]] that is mined by a player, destroyed by an [[explosion]], or washed away by [[water]].
* An inventory item tossed by pressing the drop item key (default {{key|Q}} on PC, {{xbtn|dpad-down}} on Xbox, {{nsbtn|down}}/{{nsbtn|dpad-down}} on Nintendo Switch, {{psbtn|dpad-down}} on PlayStation) or dragging a stack outside of an inventory window.
** In the mobile versions of {{el|be}}, items in the hotbar can be dropped by pressing on the item's slot. The entire stack is dropped.
* A container (other than an {{BlockLink|ender chest}} or a {{BlockLink|shulker box}}) that is destroyed while holding items inside.

The player may be thought of as having an "item pickup" box that surrounds their hitbox. This pickup box extends 1 additional block to the horizontal sides, and 0.5 additional blocks up and down. Any item whose hitbox intersects with the pickup box can be picked up. The pickup box is inclusive on the horizontal sides (distance less than or equal to 1 will count), and exclusive on the vertical sides (distance less than 0.5 will count, but not equal). When the player's hitbox size changes, such as when crouching{{only|java}} or sleeping, the pickup box size changes with it.

Once an item entity's hitbox overlaps with the player's pickup box, it can transfer its items. As many items as can fit in the player inventory, excluding the armor slots and the [[dual wield|off-hand slot]], are transferred. If any item is transferred, [[Item (entity)#Sounds|a "plopping" sound]] is played. If all items are transferred, the items appear to move into the center of the player. The item entity never physically moves, however, which means it can appear to go through lava and blocks in its path. This can happen through blocks that are thinner than a full block, but also through the shared edge of two full blocks. Unlike [[experience orb]]s, multiple item entities can be picked up simultaneously. Dropped items have a delay of 10 [[tick]]s (half a second) between appearing and being able to be picked up, or 40 ticks (2 seconds) if thrown by a player, [[dolphin]], or [[fox]].

When two stackable items of the same type come within 3/4 of a block of each other, they merge into a single stack if the resulting stack size does not exceed that item's maximum stack size.

Items do not collide with other entities(except boats) and are only moved or stopped by blocks.

Like other entities, items can be pushed by flowing water and [[bubble column]]s, pushed by a [[piston]], launched by a moving [[slime block]], stuck to a [[honey block]], or caught in a [[cobweb]]. Items move at faster speeds if [[ice]] is placed under the flowing water. When in still water, items float slowly up to the surface.

Items can be reared by [[fishing rod]]s, costing 3 [[durability]].{{only|je}}

If an item is within a [[solid block]], then it flies out one of the unobstructed sides, or out of the top of the block if surrounded by solid blocks on all sides. It does this even if the space below is unoccupied; therefore, it is possible to recover an item dropped by breaking a hole in a floor by quickly placing another block there.

Items visually disappear when the player is about 16 blocks away from them, and reappear when they get closer. This distance can be adjusted by the "Entity Distance" slider in [[Options#Video Settings|video settings]].

Unlike most entities, items cannot be spectated in [[Spectator]] mode without use of the {{cmd|spectate}} command.

=== Damage ===
Items cannot be attacked by players or mobs; attempting to do so simply hits through them. However, they take damage and disappear from environmental or block-based damage such as [[explosion]]s, [[fire]], [[lava]], and contact with [[cactus|cacti]]. Items have essentially no health, so they are destroyed by the slightest damage, though if set on fire they may remain for a few seconds before disappearing. [[Nether star]]s are immune to explosions, and [[netherite]]-based items and tools are immune to fire and float on top of lava. Also, some blocks that normally damage mobs, such as [[magma block]]s, [[campfire]]s, [[Sweet Berries|sweet berry bushes]], [[flower|wither rose]]s and [[powder snow]], do not damage items.

=== Despawning ===

Items despawn after 6000 game [[tick]]s (5 minutes) of being in a loaded, entity-ticking [[chunk]]; this is affected by the player's [[simulation distance]]. If two item stacks merge, the timer is set to the item that has more time remaining. The 5-minute timer is paused when the chunk is unloaded or no longer processing entities. Nether stars do not despawn{{only|bedrock}}.

Items that fall into the [[void]] immediately despawn when they fall below Y=-128 in the [[Overworld]], or Y=-64 in [[the Nether]] and [[the End]].

A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. For more information about placement on transparent blocks, see [[Opacity/Placement]].

The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")

The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.

It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off. 

Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

The redstone comparator has four functions: maintain signal strength, compare signal strength, subtract signal strength, and measure certain block states (primarily the fullness of containers).

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).

A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.

Items that stack to a max of 16  ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

If the pickaxe is enchanted with [[Fortune]], it has a 33.3% chance to multiply the drops by 2, Fortune II has a 25% chance to multiply the drops by 2 or 3 and Fortune III has a 20% chance each to multiply the drops by 2, 3, or 4 for a maximum possible drop of 24 golden nuggets. The average drop rate for a Fortune III pickaxe is 8.8, while the drop rate for a [[Silk Touch]] pickaxe is a single ingot, or a flat rate of 9. It is slightly more efficient to mine with a Silk Touch pickaxe. 

[[Gilded Blackstone|Gilded blackstone]] mined using a pickaxe has a 10% chance to drop 2-5 gold nuggets. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune I, the chance gold nuggets drop is increased 14.29%, Fortune II increases the drop chance to 25%, and Fortune III guarantees the drop.

== Usage ==

Gold nuggets can be used to craft a [[golden carrot]] or [[glistering melon]] for brewing. Also, gold nuggets can be combined with gunpowder and dye to create a [[firework star]] that bursts in a star-shaped explosion. 

[[Piglin]]s instantly pick up any gold nuggets that are within 1 [[block]] of them. Unlike other gold-related items, they do not intentionally seek out gold nuggets to pick up and only pick them up if they walk near it. Unlike gold ingots, gold nuggets picked up are dropped upon the piglin's death.

A sword can also be used to destroy certain blocks 50% quicker, sometimes much quicker than with fists. Using a sword to destroy any block that doesn't break instantly by hand decreases its durability by 2; this includes bamboo, despite that the sword is the fastest tool for breaking it.<ref>{{bug|MC-195168||Swords consume double durability than they normally would when destroying bamboo saplings, bamboo, or cobwebs}}</ref>

If a sword is enchanted with [[Silk Touch]], either using [[Creative]] or [[commands]], cobwebs the sword destroys will drop the cobwebs themselves instead of the usual string. This is due to the sword being classified as the proper tool for cobwebs.

Previously, since the [[Adventure Update]], all types of swords could be used to parry to block some forms of damage. If the player is blocking with a sword when attacked, the sword deflects 50% of incoming damage from melee, non-magical projectiles like arrows, and explosions, along with minimizing airborne knockback. The sword is held in front of the player and its durability is not reduced by blocking. The player moves at a slower rate than [[sneaking]] if blocking with a sword. Sword blocks could be engaged and disengaged instantly, with no delay between the input and damage mitigation nor cooldown between lowering a block and raising a new one.
 
After the [[Combat Update]], the sword blocking functionality was replaced by blocking with [[shield]]s and to accommodate the [[dual wield]] system. Shields negate more damage and knockback than sword blocking from "blockable" attacks (they block 100% damage and knockback after [[Java Edition 1.11]]), but, unlike swords, they lose durability, have a 0.25 second startup period before damage can be mitigated and can be temporarily disabled by attacks with an [[axe]].

Trivia

  • There are a possible fourteen trillion (14,062,500,000,000) real chunks that can be generated. There are 7.46×10244,700 possible chunks, excluding entities.
  • If a player stands in a chunk that has not generated yet, the world immediately becomes invisible until they are in a valid chunk. This does not happen if the Y coordinates are beyond the chunk boundaries.
  • In Bedrock Edition, if one of the sixteen 16×16×16 sections of a chunk doesn't have any blocks in it, placing a block there shows the same animation as a chunk loading. This bug makes the block that the player placed turn to the same color of the sky in the direction the player is facing for about 1 second and starts fading away into the normal block texture. If the time is sunrise or sunset and the player places a block there, it actually changes colors constantly for 1 second if the player keeps bobbing their head up and down. The block also makes blocks behind it appear invisible.
