Chests are placeable blocks that were introduced in one of the many versions of Indev labeled as "0.31". They have three texture faces - one on the top and bottom, one on the front, and one on the other remaining sides. A single chest can store up to 27 stacks of Items or Blocks. When two chest blocks are placed next to each other, they form a large chest and storage capacity is doubled to 54. Internally a large chest's top three rows of slots correspond to the right chest block while the bottom 3 rows of slots correspond to the left chest block. Any blocks other than glass, leaves, single steps (and presumably other non-solid blocks) placed on top of a chest prevents it from opening.
Normal and large sized chests.
If a chest containing items is destroyed, its contents will also be dropped. Destroying one half of a large chest reverts the other half to a regular chest and only drops the contents of the destroyed half. In Alpha multiplayer, items dropped from a destroyed chest block might not be able to be picked up.
Chests can be found in Dungeons. However, the chest is guarded by a Mob Spawner. Sometimes additional chests can be found around the Mob Spawner, usualy hidden under cobblestone, mossy cobblestone or regular stone. Items are found inside the additional chest as usual.
Chest can be combined with a Minecart to make a Storage Minecart.
Torches placed on chests
It is possible to attach torches to either sides of a chest, by placing it on a piece of glass under the chest. Since torches cannot be attached to glass, it gets moved one block up, onto the chest. The glass can be removed after the process.

Glitches
Chest glitch
Previously, if a chest is placed next to a large chest it will attempt to "connect" with the large one, changing its texture to that of half a large chest. However, this is purely visual; they will still act like two separate chests. Additionally, if one attempted to open a chest connected on all four sides, the game freezes and the client crashes.
As of Beta 1.1_02, this is still possible; however, chests cannot be placed horizontally adjacent to a large chest unless placed in the location of a water source block. They can still be placed above or below it, and this still prevents the bottom one from opening.
