A Carrot on a Stick is an item that can be used to control saddled pigs.

Use

To use a carrot on a stick, the player must first saddle the pig. The pig will then move in the direction that the carrot on a stick points to. To make the pig run faster the player can right click while holding the Carrot on a stick.[1] It is not possible to have the pig swim into water. Hitting the pig will make it move randomly as if it were hurt. Also, if the player holds a carrot on a stick, all pigs (saddled or not) will follow the player (replacing wheat as the breeding item). Pigs can climb ladders and vines allowing for vertical movement besides jumping. The player can ride pigs through portals. The pigs will slowly eat the carrot, eventually leaving you with a fishing rod. You'll have to re-craft the carrot on a stick before controlling the pig again.

While boosting, it is possible to hold any other item until the pig stops. This allows the player to e.g. charge onto a mob with a sword or strafing around with a bow, making you less vulnerable while charging a shot. This boost, however, comes at a cost of 1/4 of the item's durability. If the Carrot on a Stick has less than 25% of durability, the boost cannot be used.

The speed of a mounted pig is at 4.00 m/s, boosting it doubles the speed to 8.00 m/s. The boost takes 5 seconds to warm up and lasts 40 seconds. Therefore, it is possible to travel up to 340 blocks on a single boost without holding the Carrot on a Stick.

History

r
August 28, 2012Dinnerbone released images of saddled pigs being controlled with carrots.[2] They will start slow but will end up going up to 5 blocks per second (5m/sec).[3] Wheat was considered as a "fuel" along with carrots,[4] and Dinnerbone eventually decided upon carrots.[5]
12w36aAdded carrot on a stick. The player does not get back a fishing rod once the stick is used up.
12w37aCarrots on sticks now have a durability meter, and can be used to give saddled pigs a burst of speed when right-clicked. The carrot on stick no longer needs to be held when pigs have the burst of speed.
12w38aUsing up a carrot on a stick now returns a fishing rod.
