Steve wearing a cape
Capes (previously known as cloaks) are extremely rare vanity items and are worn in addition to the player's skin. There is currently no way to obtain a cape on one's own, although there are various mods that allow players to obtain one, only visible to that player (or in some cases, other users of that mod). In the Legacy Console Edition and Bedrock Edition of the game, some skins from various skin packs include capes. Players on Java Edition who legitimately have one or more capes can choose which to wear (including no cape) by going to their Minecraft profile.

Other Capes
| Name | Image | Original | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowdin Translator Cape |
|
This cape is given to translators on the Minecraft translation project at Crowdin. Originally, these capes were given out using a fair dice roll to 29 translators,[24][25] with plans to give more capes to translators from time to time.[26] Jeb later said that he canceled those plans after seeing abusive behavior from some translators like using auto-translation and down-voting legitimate translations[27].
As of May 7, 2016, it appears these plans have resumed, with the exact reason currently unknown. | |
| Crowdin Chinese Translator Cape |
|
On June 4, 2015, Powup333, Craft_Lawrence and sjjklh received this cape for playing vital roles on Crowdin Translation Project in Chinese[29]. The cape is identical to the Crowdin cape except for the pixelated Chinese flag on the reverse side of the cape. This cape shares similar design style with cheapsh0t's Cape. | |
| Scrolls Cape |
|
On November 7, 2014, it was announced that there was a new Scrolls cape. Players who earned the Weekly First Place winner badge five times were given access to the cape. There are only ten users with this cape[30]. As of September 30, 2015, it is no longer possible to earn this cape[31].
On December 11 & 12, 2014, all users were shown with this scrolls cape to celebrate the release of Scrolls[32]. This cape was not added to user accounts. | |
| Cobalt Cape |
|
Given out only to participants/winners of level-making competitions and the Cobalt League tournaments[33].
As of June 3, 2019, twenty users own this cape.[34] The design of this cape's elytra is based on a wasp enemy from Cobalt[35]. | |
| Mojira Moderator Cape | This cape was given to the bug tracker moderators on December 25, 2014, and again from May 9, 2016 onwards. As of June 3, 2019, thirty-nine users own this cape.[36] | ||
| Realms Mapmaker Cape |
|
This cape was given to mapmakers who have followed the criteria as listed here. As of June 3, 2019, 119 users own this cape.[37] |
Trail
- The cape texture model is the same as the Elytra texture model in the resource pack.
- However, using the texture model for a cape will not make it a cape, as the Elytra entity itself is different from a cape.
Unused Capes
- MINECON 2011
These capes were featured in a poll where MINECON 2011 attendees could vote for their cape of choice. The red creeper cape won MINECON 2011, and the blue cape with the pickaxe was for MINECON 2012. These following capes are still unused though may appear in the future.[38]

A heart of the sea is a rare item that can be crafted into a conduit.
Obtaining
The heart of the sea must be found. It cannot be crafted or obtained by trading, making it a non-renewable resource.
A heart of the sea is obtained from a buried treasure. The location is marked with a noticeable red X on a buried treasure map, which is found in ocean ruins and shipwrecks. Feeding raw cod or raw salmon to a dolphin causes the dolphin to swim toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruins.

minecraft:dupe_hack is a joke item from Java Edition 23w13a_or_b.
Obtaining
Once the <code>dupe_hack_occurrence_chance</code> vote is approved the dupe hack item has a random chance of dropping whenever an entity with chests is killed by a player, e.g. when destroying a minecart with chest with a sword.
It doesn't appear in the creative menu, not even when the option "Operator Items Tab" is enabled, but can be given to the player with <code>/give</code> and other commands.
Usage
The dupe hack item can be used to create a limited amount of duplicate items by placing it on a crafting table with any other item. It has a random chance of breaking, controlled by the <code>dupe_hack_break_chance</code> vote. This limitation can be mostly bypassed by putting the items in an ender chest first and duplicating the chest.

A minecart with chest is a single chest inside a minecart, and functions as such.
Natural generation
Minecarts with chests containing loot naturally generate in mineshafts, each on top of a piece of rail.
Obtaining
Crafting
Minecarts with chests can be retrieved by attacking them. By doing so it drops as an item and any other contents of the chest are dropped as well.
Usage
Minecarts with chests can be placed by on any type of rail.
Chest minecarts' contents can be accessed by pressing use item button on them. The interaction makes no sounds and the chest does not show the opening or closing animation, unlike regular chests.
The boost that minecarts with chests gain from powered rails is dependent on their load. For example, from a 1 powered rail starter track, an empty minecart with chest travels 64 blocks, but a full minecart with chest travels only 16 blocks (opposed to 80 blocks for an occupied normal minecart and 8 blocks for an empty normal minecart).
Another physical property of chest minecarts is their ability to be stacked. While three chests can fit in an area three blocks tall, up to four chest minecarts can fit in the same area. Like other minecarts, an unlimited number of minecarts with chests can exist in the same block space.
Minecarts with chests are also able to interact with hoppers. Hoppers can take items out from the minecart chest if they are below the track as the minecart rolls over it or put them in if the minecart rolls under a downward facing hopper. Hoppers can also input items if they are facing into the side of the minecart.
Opening or destroying a minecart with chest angers piglins.
Tutorials/Storage minecarts
When on top of detector rails, nearby redstone comparators will give out redstone signals based on how full the minecarts with chests are.

Netherite ingots are items obtained from crafting netherite scraps and gold ingots together, as well as loot from bastion remnant loot chests. Unlike other items, they are immune to fire and lava damage. They are primarily used to upgrade diamond gear and craft lodestones.
Obtaining
Netherite ingots are obtained by crafting four netherite scraps and four gold ingots. It is a shapeless recipe, therefore the placement of the netherite scraps and gold ingots does not matter when crafting it.

Smithing ingredient
Netherite ingots can be used on a smithing table to upgrade diamond items to netherite items, as well as trim any armor piece. Data such as durability, enchantments, and custom names are preserved.

The following color palettes are shown on the designs on trimmed armor:
* netherite ingot
* (a darker color palette is used when a netherite armor piece is trimmed using a netherite ingot).
Repairing
Netherite ingots are the repair items for the netherite tier and armor material, and thus can be used to repair the following items in an anvil:
* Netherite Helmet
* Netherite Chestplate
* Netherite Leggings

* Netherite Pickaxe
* Netherite Axe
* Netherite Shovel
* Netherite Hoe
Beacons
A netherite ingot could be used to select powers from a beacon instead of using an emerald, gold ingot, iron ingot, or a diamond. The player must select one of the available powers, and then insert an ingot in the item slot. The gold option is more efficient than the netherite option because it consumes 3 fewer gold and no netherite scrap.

A saddle is an item required to ride pigs and striders or control ridden camels, horses, donkeys and mules.
Obtaining
Chest loot
saddle
Fishing
Saddles can be obtained as a "treasure" item from fishing with a base chance (without fishing rod enchantments) of 0.8%.
Trading
Master-level leatherworker villagers have a 50% chance to sell a saddle for 6 emeralds as their trade.bedrock This trade is always offered in Java Edition.
Mob loot
Any mob that the player equips with a saddle drops the saddle upon death.
A strider may spawn being ridden by a zombified piglin, which causes it to spawn wearing a saddle. This saddle always drops when the strider is killed.
A ravager always spawns with a saddle and always drops the saddle upon death. Looting does not affect the drop.
Usage
While camels, horses, donkeys, mules and skeleton horsesJava can always be ridden, a saddle is required to control them. These mobs (only after being tamed, in the case of equine mobs) can be equipped with a saddle by placing it in their inventory, which can be opened by pressing use while holding a saddle or sneaking. The saddle can be unequipped by removing it from Saddle the specific inventory slot.
Saddles are required to ride pigs and striders, but even with a saddle their movement cannot be controlled like other mobs. A carrot on a stick (for pigs) or a warped fungus on a stick (for striders) is required to direct these mobs. Using a saddle on one of these mobs equips them with the saddle, and, since they have no inventory, there is no way to retrieve the saddle without killing the mob.
Animals can also be equipped with saddles by a dispenser.
Although ravagers are equipped with saddles and sometimes ridden by other mobs, the player is unable to ride ravagers.

* A saddle is considered "armor" by the game, but the value of protection to the animal is zero.
* A saddle on a pig can still be seen if the pig is afflicted with Invisibility.
* When riding a saddled mob, the hunger bar is replaced by hearts (representing the mounted mob's health) resembling the look of the saddle.

- ↑ "29 translators have now received a Minecraft cape (based on a secret selection formula + they have added their MC name to crowdin)" – @jeb_ (Jens Bergensten) on X, May 16, 2012

- ↑ "Your profile was included in my selection, but you must've added your Minecraft name after I ran the parsing program. I will obviously update the translator list as time goes on, but it's surrounded with a lot of manual labor, so I'll probably not do it very often. However, adding a note to my calendar to fix yours specifically, on Friday." – u/jeb_ on Reddit
- ↑ "Seriously, this is why I stopped handing out translator capes =( The idea was to give something cool back to the ones who helped out, but the result was a bunch of "me too:s" that just auto-translated stuff and down-voted real translations." – u/jeb_ on Reddit
