This feature is exclusive to Minecraft Education.

The camera is an entity that is capable of capturing and storing images. In the Education Edition, it works together with the portfolio item to create collections of pictures.[1]

Obtaining

In the Education Edition, it can be obtained in the creative inventory or with the /give command.

Usage

In the Education Edition, using a camera from one's inventory will take a first-person screenshot. It may also be placed, creating a camera entity that can track the user, and take pictures from the camera's perspective. Photos taken with the camera appear in the portfolio.

Close-up snapshots of an item on the ground can be taken by holding the Shift key while right-clicking.

Trivia

  • The camera's texture underneath is rotated incorrectly.
  • Cameras take damage like other mobs, because they are entities. They are affected by knockback.
  • You can kill a camera by placing it at a lethal height. Since it is an entity, it will fall and display a death animation.

History

Pocket Edition Alpha
0.1.0The camera was first found in the Pocket Edition .apk file.[2][3] To use a camera, equip it in your hand, then look in the direction you want the picture to be taken. Long-press the screen, and a camera will drop to the ground where you are standing. Step back, then press on the camera until it starts emitting smoke particles. The smoke means a picture has been taken, and the camera may disappear immediately afterwards. Cameras have infinite uses.
May 17, 2012The item ID for the camera (456) was discovered and the object was seen in-game by players for the first time.
0.2.0Original camera tripod texture removed.
0.5.0The camera is now invisible and makes the standard player damage sound.
0.7.0Added the "F1" feature (Hide GUI) making the camera obsolete.
0.8.0Camera looks like an egg in player's inventory.
0.9.0build 1The camera entity was removed. Tommaso also stated: "It doesn't mean that it's dead forever, in fact I have a lot of ideas for it! I think it will be back when have shaders, sharing and redstone."[4]
0.14.0build 1Re-added camera. It is currently unobtainable in-game.
Updated texture.
0.14.2The camera item ID changed to 498, but it cannot be used at the moment. But the entity can be spawned with a spawn egg with data value 62.
According to the language files of MCPE, the empty label that shows up whenever hovering a finger to a camera would now say "Take Picture". However, the button doesn't do anything.
0.15.0build 1The previous empty label mentioned above now displays the words "Take Picture".
The health of the camera entity is now 2♥ instead 4♥♥.
0.16.0build 1Camera now has a block form in inventory but still spawns the entity. However, the block can be placed with commands and editing.
Take picture button works now. However, it still doesn't save image files.
The oldest ID for camera (456) now refers to Portfolio.
build 2Camera now has an item form, and the block is removed.
Removed portfolio.
build 4Camera item form is removed, and the camera can no longer be obtained or placed using any command.
Education Edition
1.0Added cameras along with the portfolio.

Future

At the Minecraft Pocket Edition panel at MineCon 2012, as well as one of Jbernhardsson's livestreams, it was stated that future plans include trying to have a proper use for cameras, perhaps an easier way to take screenshots and share them with others.[5] In the BlockTalk Q&A, the camera was briefly mentioned as part of a broader "sharing" theme planned for MCPE in the future.[6]
