A bone is an item dropped by Skeletons upon death. The amount of bones dropped varies from 0-2 bones.

Uses

Bones can be used to tame wild wolves. It will usually take more than one bone to tame one wolf.

Bones can be used to make Bone Meal, which serves four purposes:

  • It can be used as a fertilizer for farming that immediately makes plants grow to their mature state.
  • It can also be used to grow Tall Grass, Flowers and Mushrooms. When used on Mushrooms they become as tall or taller than trees. However, Bone Meal is not guaranteed to work 100% of the time when used as a fertilizer.
  • It can act as a dye that colors a sheep's wool white and can be combined with other dyes. However, there is no way to craft bones. They are only dropped by killing skeletons.
  • With the addition of the pyramids in a recent snapshot (12w21a), bones can be found in the chests inside the hidden room, meaning that bones are now obtainable on peaceful mode without the need to kill skeletons.

As a Crafting Material

Bone creates 3 Bone Meal when put in the crafting table.

History

As of Beta 1.4, bones are used to tame wild wolves. In most cases, more than one bone will need to be used on the wolf. Bones were once the only way of taming Wolves, meaning that to increase the number of tame wolves the player had, it was necessary to go out and kill more Skeletons to get the Bones to tame new wolves. However, in Snapshot 12w03a (1.2.5), Wolf breeding became available. By feeding two tamed wolves a type of meat, a puppy can be born that is already tame. This means that an unlimited number of tame wolves can be gained from just two bones. This allows the player to use Bones more often for Bonemeal.
