Usage
A block of redstone will power dust and repeaters, deactivate attached torches, and activate mechanisms (left) – but won't power adjacent opaque blocks (right).
The block of redstone was introduced to provide a solid block to act as a power source.
A block of redstone acts like a regular block powered by a torch:
- Attached redstone torches will deactivate.
- Adjacent redstone dust will be powered with signal strength 15.
- Correctly-facing adjacent redstone repeaters and redstone comparators will be powered.
- Adjacent mechanism components will be activated.
- Adjacent opaque blocks will not be powered.
- Exception: Redstone dust will configure itself to point towards an adjacent block of redstone, even though it won't configure itself to point towards a block powered by a torch.
The block of redstone serves as compact storage for redstone, like other blocks of minerals (block of iron, block of gold, etc.).
The block can also act as a movable power source, such as being pushed by a piston, and generally makes circuits that use pistons more compact.

Raw copper is a raw metal resource obtained from mining copper ore.
Obtaining
Mining
Copper ore and deepslate copper ore mined with a stone pickaxe or better drops 2–5 units of raw copper. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it can drop extra raw copper, allowing for a maximum of 20 units per ore block with Fortune III, or an average of 7.7 units of raw copper per ore block. If the ore is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops the ore block instead.

Trivia
- Even though redstone ore must be mined with iron or diamond pickaxes, blocks of redstone can be mined with any pickaxe.
- The block of redstone used to have a very similar texture to the block of coal, but the block of coal's texture was later changed.
- As the block of redstone is not fully opaque, chests can be opened when covered by one. Also, non-solid blocks such as ladders cannot be placed onto its sides.
- Additionally, a glitch involving use of redstone blocks and fences, it is possible to get through a redstone block and find any cave without usage of client modifications or waste of pickaxes.
- If a redstone torch is placed on a block of redstone, after 1 tick the torch will turn off.
