This article is about the mineral block. For the ore, see Copper Ore. For the item, see Copper Ingot. For the raw variant, see Block of Raw Copper. For other uses, see Copper.

The block of copper and cut copper are blocks that oxidize over time, gaining a verdigris appearance over four stages. They can be prevented from oxidising by being waxed with honeycombs. Non-cut, non-oxidized, non-waxed copper blocks are storage blocks equivalent to nine copper ingots.

Obtaining[]

Breaking[]

Blocks of copper can be mined only with a stone pickaxe or better. If a block of copper is mined without the use of a pickaxe, it drops nothing.

Waxing[]

Copper blocks can be turned into the respective waxed copper blocks by using a honeycomb item on them. Waxed copper blocks do not oxidize and are identical to the non-waxed version.

Scraping[]

Using an axe on a waxed copper block turns it into the respective non-waxed copper block. In addition, using an axe on an exposed, weathered, or oxidized copper block reverts it one stage to a regular, exposed, or weathered copper block respectively.

Lightning strike[]

Non-waxed copper blocks are completely deoxidized when struck by lightning, and other non-waxed copper blocks nearby are deoxidized randomly.

Usage[]

Blocks of copper can be used to store copper ingots in a compact fashion. Weathered or cut variants cannot be crafted back into copper ingots, but the waxed block variant can. The cut variant can be crafted into slabs or stairs. Stonecutting blocks of copper gives four times more products than typical for stone.

Oxidation[]

Non-waxed copper blocks have four stages of oxidation (including the initial normal state). Lightning bolts and axes can remove the oxidation on copper blocks.

As the block begins to oxidize (exposed copper), it gets discolored and green spots begin to appear. As the oxidation continues (weathered copper), the block is a green color with brown spots. In the last stage (oxidized copper), the block is teal with several green spots.

Oxidation of copper blocks relies only on random ticks. Rain or water does not accelerate oxidation, and covering copper blocks with other blocks does not prevent oxidation.

In Java Edition, groups of non-waxed copper blocks oxidize far more slowly than single copper blocks that are spaced at least 4 blocks apart. This is because a block in a group being less oxidized than the others slows down the oxidation process for all other blocks within 4 blocks of taxicab distance. However, if one wishes to increase the oxidation speed, placing oxidized copper blocks around less oxidized copper blocks does not offer a speed improvement over simply placing the blocks 4 apart. The calculations for the oxidation behavior are as follows:

In Java Edition, when a random tick is given, a copper block has a 641125 chance to enter a state called pre-oxidation. This means a copper block enters pre-oxidation after approximately 20 minutes.

In pre-oxidation, the copper block searches its nearby non-waxed copper blocks for a distance of 4 blocks taxicab distance. If there is any copper block that has a lower oxidation level, then the pre-oxidation ends, meaning that this copper block does not weather.

Let a be the number of all nearby non-waxed copper blocks, and b be the number of nearby non-waxed copper blocks that have a higher oxidation level. We derive the value of c from this equation: c = b + 1a + 1. We also let the modifying factor m be 0.75 if the copper block has no oxidation level, or 1 if the copper block is exposed or weathered.[1] Then the oxidation probability is mc2.

For example, an unweathered copper block surrounded by 6 unweathered copper blocks and 6 exposed copper blocks has a 21.7% chance to oxidize if it enters the pre-oxidation state. In this case, a = 12, b = 6, and m = 0.75.[2]

The most efficient way of laying out the copper blocks for oxidation is in a 7×7×6 face-centered cubic (fcc)/cubic close-packed (ccp) lattice.

Deoxidation[]

Using an axe on a waxed copper block turns it into the respective non-waxed copper block. In addition, using an axe on an exposed, weathered, or oxidized copper block reverts it one stage to a regular, exposed, or weathered copper block respectively. The axe removes wax first, then oxidation layers.

Lightning can also remove oxidation from copper blocks. A lightning bolt striking an non-waxed copper block (or a lightning rod attached to one) removes all oxidation from the struck block, and may also deoxidize randomly selected copper blocks nearby.

In Java Edition, these additional blocks are chosen by random walks as follows: The position of the struck copper block is set as the start point. Then, the game performs 3 to 5 walks. In the beginning of each walk, a judgment point is set at the start point. For each step of the walk, the game randomly selects 10 blocks from a 3×3×3 volume centered on the judgment point. If an non-waxed copper block is found among these 10 blocks, the judgment point is transferred to the first such block found, and 1 oxidation layer of that block is removed (if the block is still unoxidized, the block stays as it is). The number of steps in a walk is between 1 and 8 (inclusive), chosen randomly for each walk. This means that one single lightning strike can deoxidize up to 41 blocks (1 block initially struck by lightning + 5 max walks*8 max steps in every walk).[3]

Usage
Igniting
When on the space above any solid top surface, on any side of any flammable block or any side of any obsidian block within a valid unlit nether portal frame regardless of if there is a solid top surface available, the flint and steel places a fire there.

Flint and steel can be used to light unlit campfires, candles and cakes with candles.

Flint and steel can be used to light nether portals, as any fire existing within an appropriate obsidian frame will instantly be replaced with nether portal blocks that occupy the entirety of the frame.

Using flint and steel on TNT ignites it. The explosion damage dealt by TNT ignited with flint and steel in this specific way counts as the player's attack. If the player is a fire is instead placed on the side of the TNT the flint and steel was used on.

A flint and steel can be used on a creeper to force it to explode. Explosions initiated in this way cannot be cancelled.

When powered, a dispenser containing flint and steel can place fires or ignite relevant blocks such as TNT or campfires in the space directly in front of it. This reduces the flint and steel's durability. A dispenser containing a flint and steel cannot detonate creepers.

Enchantments
Trivia
* In Adventure mode, flint and steel cannot light fires, nor can it ignite nether portals (unless it has the tag CanPlaceOn:obsidian). However, it can still ignite TNT and creepers.
* The name "Flint and Steel" may be misleading and is inaccurate considering the game doesn’t have and possibly will have steel in the game and it's crafted with iron instead. This is similar to the Old Growth Pine Taiga, as there are no pines in the game and they have Spruce Trees instead.
**In real life, Iron can’t be used as a fire striker, so Mojang had to rename it to Flint and Steel so it makes more sense. This explains why it is called Flint and Steel, but there is no steel in the game.
**Steel was mentioned by Mojang, as a “stronger” iron, but shortly rejected, and there are no currently no plans to add it to the game.
* Flint and steel cannot light end portals.
* Flint and Steel is the first item to mention another item that is not in the game.
*In the April Fools Snapshot, Java Edition 23w13a or b, one of the possible voted was “Flint and Steel can ignite any block”.

An eye of ender is a craftable item used to locate strongholds and activate the end portals within them.

Obtaining
Crafting
Usage
Locating strongholds
To locate strongholds (and the end portals they house):
* Pressing use while holding an eye of ender causes it to fly approximately 12 blocks in the direction of the nearest stronghold, traveling through any blocks necessary, and leave a trail of purple particles, the same particle effect used for endermen and ender chests.
** The eye leads to the chunk where a spiral staircase, the first room generated in the stronghold, is located.
** The center of this entrance staircase is always exactly at the chunk coordinates 4, ~, 4, although the eye of ender leads to chunk coordinates 0, ~, 0 (the northwest corner of the chunk).
* While over 12 blocks away from the northwest corner of the staircase chunk, the eye will travel upward to offer an easily-visible indication of the horizontal direction the player must travel.
* When closer than 12 blocks to the northwest corner of the staircase chunk, the eye will travel downward, to indicate the player is above a stronghold and must mine downward.
* After two or three seconds of travel, the eye floats in the air briefly, then either falls (becoming collectable again) or shatters in mid-air. The eye has a 20% chance of shattering (80% chance of surviving) per throw, therefore throwing it three times has approximately 50% overall chance to shatter the eye (0.83=51.2%).
* The eye of ender's flying function works only in the Overworld. It does nothing in the Nether, the End, custom dimensions, or in worlds with no strongholds.

Note that the eyes may point to an incorrect location if the target chunks were generated with a different biomes map in an older version or through different generation settings.

Activating end portals
Once an end portal is found, the eyes of ender are required to activate it. End portals require a total of 12 eyes of ender in order to activate, though each individual frame-block has a 10% chance of containing an eye of ender when generated. Eyes can be placed in empty End portal frames by pressing use on them until the entire ring of 12 is filled, thereby activating the portal. Due to the fact that there is a 10% chance of each individual end portal frame having an eye in it, there is a one out of one trillion chance of every frame having an eye in it thereby activating the portal even if the player doesn't have any eyes of ender.

Trivia
*When thrown in third-person view, the eyes of ender fly out from the player's feet instead of their hand.
*Before Java Edition 1.9, eyes of ender can be purchased from cleric villagers, which means players can find a stronghold and go to the End without accessing the Nether at all.
*bedrock if the player travels beyond a certain radius (roughly 740,000 blocks), eyes of ender always point to a stronghold near spawn, even though strongholds continue to generate past this limit. If one travels to this limit, they can see eyes of ender suddenly switching direction. A similar phenomenon occurs with the locate command.
