The Block of Coal (also known as Coal Block) is a compact way to store coal, and can be used for decoration and fuel.

As a fuel source, it can smelt 80 items, whereas every coal used one-by-one would only result in 72 items smelted. The block of coal itself is flammable, and burns in much the same manner as wood.

Crafting

Blocks of coal can only be crafted with regular coal, not charcoal. It is crafted in the same way as other mineral blocks.

Usage

As a crafting ingredient

A block of coal can be crafted back into 9 coal items, making it useful as a storage block.

As a fuel

Blocks of coal can be used as fuel in a furnace. One block of coal smelts 80 items, which is more than the smelting time of the 9 coal items used to craft it. Note that since only 64 items can fit in the furnace at a time, to prevent wasting fuel you should restock the smelting items before they run out, and empty the output slot before it fills up. Hoppers come in handy for automating this, but be warned: using a hopper to unload a furnace forfeits any experience from the smelting.

Coal is a mineral item mainly obtained from coal ore. It is primarily used for crafting torches and campfires, as well as fuel.

Obtaining
Chest loot
Coal Ore#Natural generation
coal

Mining
Coal ore are mined using a pickaxe and drops 1 piece of coal. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it may drop an extra piece per level of Fortune, up to a maximum of 4 with Fortune III.

Mob loot
Wither skeletons have a 1 chance of dropping a single coal upon death. The maximum amount of coal is increased by 1 per level of Looting. The chance of a wither skeleton not dropping any coal can be found using the formula <code>2 / (Looting Level + 3)</code>. For example, Looting III gives a 1 chance of not dropping any coal. All other amounts have an equal chance of occurring.

Coal

Fuel
When used in a furnace as a fuel, a piece of coal lasts 80 seconds (smelting up to 8 items), like charcoal. Coal used as fuel lasts more than 5 times longer than wood planks or wood logs used as fuel, being more efficient than any other use of wood for smelting je, but outstripped by wooden slabs be.

Coal and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by furnace minecarts. They provide approximately four minutes of transit each.

Trading
Novice-level fisherman villagers have a 50% chance to buy 10 coal for one emerald.

java, novice-level armorer and toolsmith villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy 15 coal for one emerald. Novice-level weaponsmith villagers and apprentice-level butcher villagers have 2 chance of offering to buy 15 coal for one emerald.

bedrock, novice-level armorer, toolsmith, and weaponsmith villagers and apprentice-level butcher villagers buy 15 coal for one emerald.

Trades that involve coal cannot be substituted by charcoal.

String is an item used in crafting recipes such as bows, fishing rods and leads. When placed as a block, string becomes tripwire, which can be combined with tripwire hooks to form a tripwire circuit.

Obtaining
String can be obtained from drops, breaking cobwebs, fishing, bartering, and as gifts from cats. String can be looted from jungle temples, desert pyramid chests, and dungeons.

Breaking
Tripwire can be instantly with any tool, dropping string. Tripwire is also removed and drops string as an item when:
*Water flows into its space
* A piston pushes it or moves a block into its space
Tripwire is destroyed without dropping string if lava flows into its space.

A cobweb drops string when it is broken in these ways (see also Cobweb):
*Breaking a cobweb with a sword
*Pushing a cobweb with a piston
*Water breaking a cobweb by flowing over it (flowing lava destroys cobwebs without leaving string)

Natural generation
Five pieces of tripwire generate naturally in every jungle temple.

Mob loot
Spiders and cave spiders drop 0–2 string upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0–5 string with Looting III.

Striders drop 2–5 string upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 2–8 string with Looting III.

Cats drop 0–2 string upon death, unaffected by Looting.

Chest loot
string

Fishing
String has a 0.6% (3) chance of being caught when fishing with an unenchanted fishing rod. The chance decreases to 0.5% (1), 0.4% (1), and 0.3% (3) if the fishing rod is enchanted with Luck of the Sea at enchantment levels I, II, and III, respectively.

Cat gifts
Cat#Gifts

Tamed cats have a 70% chance of giving the player a gift when they wake up from a bed, and the gift has a 16.13% chance to be a string.

Bartering
Piglins may barter 3-9 string when given a gold ingot.

Usage
String can be used as a crafting ingredient and tripwire can be used as a redstone circuit component. It can also be used to keep players from ender-pearling through that space.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Redstone component
Tripwire
Redstone circuits

String can be placed as tripwire, which can be used to detect entities as part of a tripwire circuit. Observers can also be used with a tripwire to generate redstone signals.

;Placement

To place tripwire, use string while pointing at a surface facing the space the tripwire should occupy.

:In order to activate tripwire hooks, tripwire must be part of a "tripwire circuit": a straight line of blocks consisting of a block with a tripwire hook attached to it, a "tripwire line" (1 to 40 blocks of tripwire), and a second tripwire hook attached to another block.

;Activation
Tripwire activates if almost any entity (players, mobs, minecarts, boats, items, arrows, etc.) intersects its collision mask. The tripwire remains active until there are no entities intersecting its collision mask. Thrown potions, some arrows, thrown ender pearls, and thrown eyes of ender do not activate tripwire.

;Behavior
An active tripwire updates adjacent blocks (for example, it can activate a BUD circuit). Additionally, active tripwires that are part of valid tripwire circuits cause the attached tripwire hooks to activate (producing redstone power). Active tripwires do not themselves produce redstone power.

When tripwire is broken (including by being washed away by spreading water java) after being part of a valid tripwire circuit, it activates the attached tripwire hooks for 5 redstone ticks (10 game ticks, or 0.5 seconds barring lag). It does not produce the signal if it is broken using shears.

Trading
Novice-level fisherman villagers have a 50% chance to buy 20 string as part of their first-tier trade.

Journeyman-level fletcher villagers buy 14 string for 1 emerald as part of their trade.

Trivia

 • Blocks of Coal was originally a recolored Block of Redstone texture, but was later changed to be a recolored Nether Quartz Ore texture.
 • Cannot be crafted using charcoal due to logical issues with crafting and destroying.[1]
 • Blocks of coal cannot be used as fuel for the minecart with furnace.
 • A full stack of coal blocks can smelt a little over fifty times as many items as a bucket of lava.
 • 31,104 coal is needed to fill a large chest full of coal blocks with 64 blocks in each stack. This would smelt 276480 items which is 80 large chests.
 • Blocks of Coal are also used decoratively in roads because of their resemblance to asphalt.
