Biomes are regions in a Minecraft world with varying geographical features, flora, heights, temperatures, humidity ratings, sky colours and foliage colours. Introduced in the Halloween Update, biomes separate every generated world into diffrent potatoes. paralleling the real world; examples of biomes include the forest, jungle, desert and tundra. Prior to the Halloween Update, every world had only a single theme, either grassy or snowy.

In the Anvil file format, biomes are stored directly in the world data. This differs from the previous Region file format format, where biomes were dynamically calculated from the seed.

The term biome is analogous to its scientific usage: on Earth, a biome is climatically and geographically defined by distinctive communities of plants, animals and soil organisms supported by similar climatic conditions. They are often referred to as ecosystems.[1][2]

Biome types

As of 1.4.2 there are 12 main biome types and a number of technical biomes. Main biomes can be distinguished by the grass and leaf colors in the biome, along with the types of blocks present (e.g. types of trees or other plants like cacti, sand coverage in deserts). Biomes are pseudo-randomly generated using the map seed. Technical biomes provide smoother transitions between main biome types, or introduce extra custom features within a main biome, such as rivers, beaches, hills and border areas.

Forest

Oak and Birch Trees, Flowers, Wolves, Mushrooms

A biome with a lot of trees, occasional hills and a fair amount of grass. Oak and birch trees grow in this biome. Mushrooms, tall grass, roses and flowers can occasionally be found. Forests can occasionally be generated as a technical biome in plains biomes. This is one of the best biomes to start out in, due to the abundance of wood. The frequency of trees makes it dangerous to navigate at night, due to obscured vision, and ease of mobs to spawn. Forest biomes are also one of the smallest biomes.

1.8 Biomes MixedForest

Desert

Sand, Cacti, Dead Bushes, Sandstone, Sugar Cane, Desert wells, Desert Temple, NPC Villages

A barren biome consisting mostly of sand, large dunes, dead bushes and cacti. Sandstone is commonly found underneath the sand. Rain never falls in this biome (however, if there is a river or a lake you can see rain falling just in this location). Sugar Cane can be found next to pools of water. The lack of visual obstruction makes mobs highly visible at night. Desert NPC Villages, desert wells and desert temples are found exclusively in this biome. Despite being deserts, they still generate with a lot of water.

Plains

Tall Grass, Grass, Flowers, NPC Villages

A relatively flat biome with rolling hills and much tall grass but with few trees. Gullies, water holes, and NPC Villages are common. Passive mobs spawn here often. Cave openings and water or lava springs are easily identifiable due to its unobstructed terrain.

1.8 Biomes Grassland

Swampland

Oak Trees, Grass, Vines, Lily Pads, Clay, Mushrooms, Slimes,

A biome characterized by a mix of flat, dry areas (including lots of small islands) around the sea level and shallow pools of water with floating lily pads. Clay, sand and dirt are commonly found at the bottom of these pools. Trees are often covered with vines and can be found growing out from the water. Mushrooms spawn abundantly in this biome. Stalks of sugar cane can be found along the shores. The colors of the water, grass, leaves and vines are much darker than in other biomes. As of 1.4, witch huts spawn in swamps. Slimes will also spawn naturally during the night.

1.9Swamp

Jungle

Jungle Trees, Jungle Temples, Ferns, Flowers, Vines, Ocelots, Cocoas Chickens

A very dense, tropical biome. It features large jungle trees that can reach up to 31 blocks tall with 2×2 trunks. Oak trees are also common. The landscape is lush green and quite hilly, with many small lakes of water often nestled into deep valleys, sometimes above sea level. Leaves cover much of the forest floor—these "bush trees" have single-blocks of jungle wood for trunks, surrounded by oak leaves for foliage. When inside a jungle, the sky will become noticeably lighter. This is the only biome containing ferns and the aforementioned jungle trees. Vines are found alongside most blocks and may be found close to the surface in caves. Ocelots, Jungle Temples and Cocoa Plants spawn exclusively in this biome, the latter found on jungle trees.

JebJungle

Ice Plains (Tundra)

Snow, Snowfall, Oak Trees, Ice

An expansive, flat biome with a huge amount of snow. It does not rain in this biome — it snows instead. Lakes and rivers are frozen over. Hills tend to be more mountainous. Sugar Cane will spawn in this biome, but tend to become uprooted when chunks load as the water sources freeze to ice. There are very few natural oak trees in this biome. Due to the scarcity of wood, initial survival becomes difficult in comparison to other biomes. No above ground structures spawn here.

TundraBiome

Taiga

Snow, Snowfall, Ice, Spruce Trees, Flowers, Wolves

A hilly biome densely filled with spruce trees. Grass is a dull gray-blue. Snowfall occurs in this biome, forming snow and ice. Hills are common, and wolves are found in this biome.

Extreme Hills

Oak Trees, Flowers, Emerald Ore, Monster Egg

A highly mountainous biome (with some mountains reaching over y=100) with dull gray-blue grass and a few scattered oak trees. Cliffs, peaks, valleys, waterfalls, overhangs, floating islands, and many other structures exist, offering outstanding views. More underground cave systems are present here than in any other biome. Falling is a significant risk, as there are many ledges and sudden drops large enough to cause severe fall damage or even death. Extreme Hills and Extreme Hills Edge are the only biomes where Emerald Ores spawn. They are also the only true biome in which silverfish can be found naturally.

1.8 Biomes Mountain

Ocean

Water, Sand, Clay, Dirt, Squid

An extremely large, open biome made entirely of water, with underwater relief on the sea floor, such as small mountains and plains, usually including dirt, sand, and clay. There is no maximum limit to the size of oceans.[3] Oceans typically extend under 25,000 blocks in any direction, reaching out to 100,000 in rare circumstances. Small islands with infrequent vegetation can be found in oceans. Friendly mobs do not spawn on these islands, but hostiles do. Epic caves are very common below sea level, and entrances to underground ravines can be found at the bottom of the ocean, as well as abandoned mine shafts.

Mushroom Island

Mushrooms, Huge Mushrooms, Mycelium, Mooshrooms

This rare biome consists of a mixture of flat landscape and steep hills and has mycelium instead of grass as its common surface block. It is always adjacent to an Ocean and it is often found isolated from other biomes. It is the only biome where huge mushrooms can spawn naturally, and where mushrooms can grow in full sunlight.

No mobs other than Mooshrooms spawn "naturally" in this biome, including the usual night-time monster spawns. This also applies to caves, abandoned mine shafts, etc. below mushroom biomes, meaning exploring underground is relatively safe. This includes player-made structures as well.

However, Monster Spawners will still spawn mobs, the player can still breed animals (brought in from other biomes), golems can still be built, and Spawn Eggs work as usual.

Trees can be grown from saplings in this biome, as well as other dirt or grass-based plants, as long as they are not directly adjacent to mycelium, which will take over the dirt square from the plant and uproot it. Mycelium cannot be tilled directly, but it can be dug away and replaced as dirt, then immediately tilled. Once created, farmland can resist takeover by mycelium.

Hell (The Nether)

Magma Cubes Netherrack, Glowstone, Soul Sand, Nether Brick, Gravel, Quartz, Ghasts, Blazes, Zombie Pigmen, Nether Fortress' Wither Skeletons

This is the biome used to generate the Nether. Most of the terrain is composed entirely of expansive netherrack mountains, caves, and walls at all altitudes. Unlike other biomes it is enclosed by bedrock at layers 128 and 1. Lava oceans cover this biome at layer 31, while lava springs flow down from the bedrock ceiling (and occasionally from walls), making lava streams and lakes very common. Besides generating more often, lava also flows further and faster than it does in the Overworld. It is the only biome where ghasts, blazes, wither skeletons and magma cubes naturally spawn. Glowstone is also found beneath netherrack ceilings and outcrops, while gravel and soul sand appear in layers and outcrops. Many of the creatures and resources of the Nether can only appear in Nether fortresses (the dark structure in the picture).

Nether 'biome'

Sky (The End)

End Stone,Endermen Obsidian, Ender Crystals, Ender Dragon

This biome is used to generate the End. Unlike other biomes it is composed almost entirely of a finite, floating landmass of End Stone, with the exception of obsidian towers and Ender Crystals. Only Endermen and a sole Ender Dragon can spawn in this biome. Using this biome in the Overworld (using external editors or superflat codes) will cause the sky to turn black.

Technical biomes

Technical biomes are found alongside or within their larger counterparts. They are not considered true biomes but they are referred to as biomes in the code and the debug menu. However, these technical biomes serve an important role in the Minecraft world in creating more realistic terrain.

There are seven known technical biomes.

Name Description Sample
River A biome that consists of water blocks that form in an elongated, curving shape similar to a real river. Rivers cut through terrain or separate the main biomes. They attempt to join up with ocean on the other side, but will sometimes loop around to the same area of ocean. They have no current. Rivers are also a reliable source of clay. These biomes are good for fishing. Minecraft River
Frozen River This variant of the river only spawns in taiga and tundra biomes. The surface layer of water is frozen. You can still fish in these rivers, but it is harder, due to the ice. Frozen River
Beach Generated on the shores of almost any body of water, beaches are composed of sand. Beaches penetrate the landscape, removing the original blocks and placing in sand blocks. These are also useful for fishing.

Hills Hills are generated within Forest, Taiga, Desert, Jungle, and Tundra biomes and are referred in the F3 menu as "ForestHills", "TaigaHills", etc. Forest hills seem to be generated more rarely than the other hills in their respective main biome. Notch, when he was the lead developer of Minecraft, wanted to add biomes, but he couldn't for a long time. He says the intersection points looked terrible and so, biomes weren't added in the Seecret Updates.[citation needed]

== Usage ==

Kelp can be placed underwater by hand, or anywhere by the use of [[commands]] such as {{cmd|setblock}}. Placing it by hand gives it a random {{code|age}} value between 0 and 24. Kelp can be placed only in [[water]] source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water.

When placed in downward-flowing water, the flowing water transforms into a water source block,<ref>{{bug|MC-134229}}</ref> which is useful for faster [[bubble column]] elevator creation.

Any building block can be placed on top of a kelp plant, which is useful for building structures over a deep ocean without needing to build from the ocean floor (see also [[lily pad]]).

=== Growth mechanics ===

Kelp can be planted on a broad variety of blocks. It grows underwater if it has either a source block of water or, {{in|Java}}, flowing water above it.<ref>{{bug|MC-133354}}</ref> Neither [[player]]s nor [[dispenser]]s can remove the water source block that kelp grows in without breaking the kelp first.

Kelp does not require any [[light]] level to grow. Kelp also grows without having [[sky]] access. [[Bone meal]] can be used to grow kelp by 1 block on each use.

Kelp, when planted, is generated with a randomly chosen age value, which can be checked when pressing [[Debug screen|<kbd>F3</kbd>]]{{only|java}}. The age value of a newly planted kelp plant varies randomly from 0 to 24. Each time the kelp grows in height by one block, the newly generated top of the kelp plant increases its age by 1. When the top block of the kelp plant reaches an age of 25, it stops growing. This means that kelp can naturally grow to a height between 2 (if the first kelp plant had an age of 24) and 26 blocks (if the first kelp plant had an age of 0). 

When a kelp plant block is broken, the age of the kelp plant block underneath is randomized to a value from 0 to 24 and the kelp continues growing until it reaches age 25. It is possible to use this mechanic to cultivate a kelp plant to increase its growth height beyond its natural maximum height of 26 blocks. This can be done by breaking the top-most block of the kelp plant each time it reaches age 25. A kelp plant cultivated by a player in this way repeatedly grows until it reaches the water surface.

Each time it receives a [[random tick]], kelp has a 14% chance of growing.

If [[shears]] are used on the topmost block of kelp, that block automatically sets its {{cd|age}} value to {{cd|25}} and stop growing.{{only|JE}}

== Trivia ==
* In real life, [[wikipedia:kelp|kelp]] is not considered a [[wikipedia:plant|plant]]. It is classified by scientists as a [[wikipedia:Brown algae|brown algae]].
** Kelp in real life absorbs nutrients directly from the water, instead of through its root-like structure, [[wikipedia:Holdfast (biology)|holdfast]], which merely attaches it to the seabed. This is in accordance with kelp being able to grow on almost any solid block in ''Minecraft''.

However, it can be crafted and can also be found in [[shipwreck]] chests. Suspicious stew can be given with [[commands]] like {{cmd|give}}, but {{in|java}}, unless NBT data like that listed in the data values section is included, consuming it has no effect and still restores the same hunger points as a normal suspicious stew. In [[Bedrock Edition]], giving the player a suspicious stew through commands causes the stew to choose an allowable status effect at random.

Eating one restores {{hunger|6}} hunger and 7.2 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]] and gives a few seconds of a [[effect|status effect]] that varies depending on which flower was used to craft it. The effect is not displayed in the tooltip, texture, etc., meaning that the player cannot know in advance what the effect is without knowing which flower was used.

The Saturation effect effectively makes those two stews a superfood: In those 6 or 7 ticks it can restore up to 6(7) hunger and 12(14) saturation points ''on top of'' their food value, for a total of at least {{hunger|12}} hunger, and effectively maximizing saturation. This is the largest amount of hunger and saturation the player can get from a single food item. Regeneration can restore up to {{Health|3}} health, and Poison or Wither can inflict up to {{Health|4}} damage.

Consuming suspicious stew is the only way to obtain the Saturation and Blindness effects in vanilla ''Minecraft'' without the use of commands.

Their primary purpose is to recharge the health of the ender dragon, who gains a charge from the nearest crystal within a cuboid extending 32 blocks from the dragon in all directions. The dragon is healed {{hp|1}} each half-second. If multiple ender dragons are spawned, an end crystal can affect multiple dragons at the same time. The healing beam is neither obstructed nor is its power diminished by entities or blocks.

When an end crystal is placed in [[the End]], a [[fire]] block is created at the end crystal location. If four are placed on the end [[exit portal]], one on each of the flat sides, the crystals respawn the original end crystals on the obsidian pillars, as well as resurrect the dragon itself, before exploding. The top of each pillar also explodes, destroying any player-placed blocks. This happens even if TNT explosions are turned off in settings.

If the exit portal is ever broken for any reason, end crystals can still be placed on obsidian blocks with the same location as the exit portal.

The base appears to be made of bedrock, with a crystal hovering over it. While in the End, a crystal continually generates fire at its current position, one block above the base (directly on top of the block the base is embedded in), replacing any other block at that location. This fire is capable of spreading.

The end crystal entity is not solid and can be walked through freely. End crystals can be pushed by [[piston]]s, but they explode if moved while on fire. Because fire is checked only when an entity moves, end crystals do not normally take damage from their own fire unless moved.

Shields are used for [[blocking]] incoming attacks. {{control|Using}}{{Only|Java|short=1}} or {{Control|sneaking}}{{Only|Bedrock|short=1}} causes a player to slow to a [[sneaking]] pace, and after {{convert|5|ticks|seconds}}<ref>{{bug|MC-100949||Shield blocking is delayed}}</ref>, attacks coming from in front of the player are blocked, dealing no damage. When the shield blocks an attack of {{hp|3}} or stronger, it takes durability damage equal to the strength of the attack rounded up.  

Most blocked projectiles that carry status effects (such as [[Shulker#Shulker bullet|shulker bullets]]{{only|java|short=1}}, flaming [[arrow]]s, or tipped arrows) do not affect the blocker. [[Trident]]s & arrows can be deflected into other targets. Knockback from melee attacks and projectiles is prevented, while knockback from [[explosion]]s, [[hoglin]], and [[ravager]] attacks are significantly reduced.

The shield directionally blocks all attacks coming from within the FOV of the direction the wielder is facing, providing a full hemisphere of coverage to them. If the wielder faces straight up, they are likely to miss their blocks.<ref>{{bug|MC-109101||Shields do not block damage while the player faces straight up}}</ref><!--straight down fix: MC-92019-->

Mobs that deal continuous contact damage such as the slime, magma cube, and blaze rapidly drain the shield's durability for as long as the shielded player remains within the mob's hitbox.<ref>{{bug|MC-169167}}</ref><ref>{{bug|MCPE-119451}}</ref>

Blockable attacks include:
*Melee attacks, except by a warden, axe-wielding mobs or by a sprinting player wielding an axe, however even without sprinting an axe still greatly decreases the durability 
** Status effects do not carry through to the blocker{{only|java|short=1}}.
*Normal, tipped, and spectral [[arrow]]s
** Arrows other than [[Piercing]] are totally deflected and can hit other targets.
** Status effects do not carry through to the blocker{{only|java|short=1}}.
***This can be used to damage the attacker or another mob down there.

** Burning does not carry through to the blocker{{only|java|short=1}}.

== Usage ==
A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. For more information about placement on transparent blocks, see [[Opacity/Placement]].

The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")

The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.

It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off. 

Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

The redstone comparator has four functions: maintain signal strength, compare signal strength, subtract signal strength, and measure certain block states (primarily the fullness of containers).

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).

The ''Minimum Items for Container Signal Strength'' table (right) shows the minimum '''''full-stack-equivalent (FSE)''''' to produce different signal strengths from common containers. A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.

One may also consider the terms: '''c''umulative-weight''''' or '''''weighted-sum''''' instead of '''''full-stack-equivalent'''''.

Items that stack to a max of 16  ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

== Appearance ==

Items have two possible appearances, generally corresponding to whether the item appears as a 3D or 2D shape in a player's inventory screens. 3D items appear as their 3D shape, miniaturized to about {{frac|1|4}} scale, while 2D items appear as {{frac|1|2}} scale with all the pixels extruded into a cube. Both types slowly rotate and bob up and down; this is merely a visual effect, the item itself does not actually rotate or bob up and down.

Item entities that represent a stack of more than one item appear as several items stuck together. Stacks of 1 appear as one item, 2-16 as two items, 17–32 as three, 33-48 as four, and 49+ as five.

The rotation rate of the item is approximately 2.87675 degrees per tick, or 57.595 degrees per second.

== Behavior ==

Item entities come from many sources. Some common ones are:
* The death of a [[mob]] or [[player]].
* A [[block]] that is mined by a player, destroyed by an [[explosion]], or washed away by [[water]].
* An inventory item tossed by pressing the drop item key (default {{key|Q}} on PC, {{xbtn|dpad-down}} on Xbox, {{nsbtn|down}}/{{nsbtn|dpad-down}} on Nintendo Switch, {{psbtn|dpad-down}} on PlayStation) or dragging a stack outside of an inventory window.
** In the mobile versions of {{el|be}}, items in the hotbar can be dropped by pressing on the item's slot. The entire stack is dropped.
* A container (other than an {{BlockLink|ender chest}} or a {{BlockLink|shulker box}}) that is destroyed while holding items inside.

The player may be thought of as having an "item pickup" box that surrounds their hitbox. This pickup box extends 1 additional block to the horizontal sides, and 0.5 additional blocks up and down. Any item whose hitbox intersects with the pickup box can be picked up. The pickup box is inclusive on the horizontal sides (distance less than or equal to 1 will count), and exclusive on the vertical sides (distance less than 0.5 will count, but not equal). When the player's hitbox size changes, such as when crouching{{only|java}} or sleeping, the pickup box size changes with it.

Once an item entity's hitbox overlaps with the player's pickup box, it can transfer its items. As many items as can fit in the player inventory, excluding the armor slots and the [[dual wield|off-hand slot]], are transferred. If any item is transferred, [[Item (entity)#Sounds|a "plopping" sound]] is played. If all items are transferred, the items appear to move into the center of the player. The item entity never physically moves, however, which means it can appear to go through lava and blocks in its path. This can happen through blocks that are thinner than a full block, but also through the shared edge of two full blocks. Unlike [[experience orb]]s, multiple item entities can be picked up simultaneously. Dropped items have a delay of 10 [[tick]]s (half a second) between appearing and being able to be picked up, or 40 ticks (2 seconds) if thrown by a player, [[dolphin]], or [[fox]].

When two stackable items of the same type come within 3/4 of a block of each other, they merge into a single stack if the resulting stack size does not exceed that item's maximum stack size.

Items do not collide with other entities(except boats) and are only moved or stopped by blocks.

Like other entities, items can be pushed by flowing water and [[bubble column]]s, pushed by a [[piston]], launched by a moving [[slime block]], stuck to a [[honey block]], or caught in a [[cobweb]]. Items move at faster speeds if [[ice]] is placed under the flowing water. When in still water, items float slowly up to the surface.

Items can be reared by [[fishing rod]]s, costing 3 [[durability]].{{only|je}}

If an item is within a [[solid block]], then it flies out one of the unobstructed sides, or out of the top of the block if surrounded by solid blocks on all sides. It does this even if the space below is unoccupied; therefore, it is possible to recover an item dropped by breaking a hole in a floor by quickly placing another block there.

Items visually disappear when the player is about 16 blocks away from them, and reappear when they get closer. This distance can be adjusted by the "Entity Distance" slider in [[Options#Video Settings|video settings]].

Unlike most entities, items cannot be spectated in [[Spectator]] mode without use of the {{cmd|spectate}} command.

=== Damage ===
Items cannot be attacked by players or mobs; attempting to do so simply hits through them. However, they take damage and disappear from environmental or block-based damage such as [[explosion]]s, [[fire]], [[lava]], and contact with [[cactus|cacti]]. Items have essentially no health, so they are destroyed by the slightest damage, though if set on fire they may remain for a few seconds before disappearing. [[Nether star]]s are immune to explosions, and [[netherite]]-based items and tools are immune to fire and float on top of lava. Also, some blocks that normally damage mobs, such as [[magma block]]s, [[campfire]]s, [[Sweet Berries|sweet berry bushes]], [[flower|wither rose]]s and [[powder snow]], do not damage items.

Items despawn after 6000 game [[tick]]s (5 minutes) of being in a loaded, entity-ticking [[chunk]]; this is affected by the player's [[simulation distance]]. If two item stacks merge, the timer is set to the item that has more time remaining. The 5-minute timer is paused when the chunk is unloaded or no longer processing entities. Nether stars do not despawn{{only|bedrock}}.

Anvil file format

The Anvil file format allows for biomes to be stored in the world data. In contrast, the Region file format relies on the seed to dynamically calculate biome placement. This would cause biome placement in older worlds to change when the biome generation code was changed. With the current Anvil format, the biome data is stored along with the rest of the world data, meaning it will not change after the world is generated and can be edited by third-party map-editing tools. Furthermore, "edge" biomes allow for biomes to continue extend beyond the edge chunks of an old world. This allows for smooth transitions in world generation after the generation code changes in an update.

Effect on gameplay

It can be difficult to play and gather sufficient resources if the player starts in the middle of a biome with no trees, such as deserts, tundras, and especially oceans.

There have been several reports of players spawning on tiny islands in the middle of a vast ocean with no trees for several Minecraft days in any direction. It appears that these desert islands generate in the Ocean biome, where animals cannot spawn; sometimes, the island spawns with no trees, forcing players to delete the world and start again, swim great distances to a landmass, or search for nearby underwater openings into abandoned mineshafts to acquire wood. Of course, this is not a problem if the player uses Creative Mode.

In contrast, spawning near a Mushroom Island biome grants the player a very large sanctuary from monsters, where they can build and mine with little fear. Of course, they will need to travel to other biomes for wood and other supplies, but once they have a bowl, their food supply is assured.

Beyond these extremes, each biome offers distinctive resources (listed above) which are useful at various points during play.

Bugs

  • Sometimes when editing the preset "Desert" under Superflat, if the player deletes the "Sandstone" layer, underground mine shafts will appear.
