Bees are neutral mobs that live in bee nests and beehives. If provoked, bees attack in a swarm to sting the player and inflict poison.

Spawning

Natural generation

Bees spawn in bee nests hanging from oak and birch trees found in Plains, Sunflower Plains and Flower Forest biomes. Every tree in these biomes has a 5% chance to have a bee nest only during world generation. Bee nests are most commonly found in the Flower Forest biome because of its tree density, as opposed to the few scattered trees found in the other biomes.

Drops

Both baby and adult bees drop no items nor experience upon death, regardless of the cause.[verify]

Behavior

Bees do not truly fly (like ghasts or ender dragons), but instead hover a few blocks above the ground similar to bats.

Bees are considered arthropods and take increased damage against the Bane of Arthropods enchantment.[1]

Bees can be attached to a lead, even when angered. They will still attack while attached.

Pollinating

Bees leave their nest one by one during the day. They fly around their nests, and are attracted by flowers. After circling a flower for a while a bee can collect pollen. A bee carrying pollen changes its texture to include pollen spots on its back and emits pollen particles.

Bees that have pollen have a chance to pollinate wheat, potatoes, carrots, beetroots, melon, pumpkin, and sweet berry bushes they fly over. When a crop is pollinated, it advances to another growth stage, similar to using bone meal. In order to pollinate a crop, the particles that drop must touch the crop. A bee can only fertilize crops 10 times each time they have pollen, and there is a small wait time between pollinating each crop.

Bees live together in colonies and take any beehive that has enough space as its home. One beehive can house up to 3 bees. Homeless bees wander around searching for empty beehives.

Bees return to their nest when it rains and when it is night. Bees stay in their nest or hive for at least 2400 game ticks (2 minutes) before coming back out. Bees that come out keep their data (health, name, etc).

Breaking a hive that contains bees will release all the bees. If a beehive containing bees is harvested using a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, the bees will be kept (along with their respective data) in the hive and when placed, they can exit it again. Note that if a nest is destroyed all bees outside their nests will also attack the player.

When a bee that has pollen enters and then leaves its nest or hive, the honey level of the nest/hive is increased by one. When the honey level of that hive reaches 5, the player can harvest it.

Attacking

All bees nearby are angered when one individual is attacked, or when a beehive is destroyed. Hitting or walking on a nest does not anger bees; it must be destroyed to anger them. When destroyed, a beehive releases any bees that it contained; these bees will be angered. If the beehive is destroyed with a Silk Touch tool, bees outside the hive will become angry, while those kept within it will be neutral even after the hive is placed again.

Bees attack and swarm the player as a group when angered, and the eyes of angered bees turn red. Collecting a honeycomb or a honey bottle from a nest or hive causes the bees from that nest or hive to leave and swarm the player, unless a campfire is placed below the hive. Bees do not attack in Peaceful difficulty.

After attacking and poisoning the player, bees lose their stinger and die within 50–60 seconds. Bees cannot attack the player if they have already lost their stinger. Bees can, therefore, attack only once.

Bees also swarm and attack other mobs when damaged, for example, if a skeleton accidentally shoots a bee.

Breeding

Bees follow players holding flowers. If the player is standing still and being followed by bees, the bees go toward the player, face the player, and rest on the ground. They do this until the player moves.

If bees are given a flower, they enter love mode and pair up to create baby bees, granting the player a small amount of experience. The parent bees have a cool-down of about 5 minutes before they can breed again. Babies take 20 minutes (1 in-game day) to grow up. The growth of baby bees can be accelerated using flowers; each use reduces the remaining time by 10%.

The flower can be any of the 1- or 2-block flowers. The wither rose, which is ordinarily harmful, has no harmful effect when used like this.

== Usage ==
A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. For more information about placement on transparent blocks, see [[Opacity/Placement]].

The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")

The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.

It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off. 

Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

The redstone comparator has four functions: maintain signal strength, compare signal strength, subtract signal strength, and measure certain block states (primarily the fullness of containers).

A redstone comparator treats certain blocks behind it as power sources and outputs a signal strength proportional to the block's state. The comparator may be separated from the measured block by an opaque block. A redstone comparator can output a signal indicating how full a container is. (0 for empty, 15 for full, etc.) The table on the right is described more in detail, later in this section.

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).

The ''Minimum Items for Container Signal Strength'' table (right) shows the minimum '''''full-stack-equivalent (FSE)''''' to produce different signal strengths from common containers. A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.

One may also consider the terms: '''c''umulative-weight''''' or '''''weighted-sum''''' instead of '''''full-stack-equivalent'''''.

Items that stack to a max of 16  ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.
