The X and Z Far Lands

The Far Lands[1] are a terrain generation bug in Bedrock Edition that happens millions of blocks from the world origin. It essentially forms the "edge" of an "infinite" world.

Location

The Far Lands initiate at X/Z: 12,550,821 and −12,550,824.

The Bedrock Edition Far Lands are different from the Java Edition Far Lands. The content of the Far Lands in the Bedrock Edition is slightly different in biomes and structure in positive coordinates. Sand and gravel do not fall from generating in Bedrock Edition, resulting in relatively stable performance. (Bubble columns can still cause those blocks to fall, however.) The Far Lands do not generate on flat worlds, due to the lack of a noise generator.

The exact structure depends on the platform. On Realms and Bedrock Dedicated Servers, the Far Lands generate the same as on Windows 10, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4: only the nothingness generates. On mobile devices and Nintendo Switch, the Edge Far Lands may generate, depending on the coordinates. In multiplayer, the structure depends on the platform used by the owner of the world. In Minecraft Education, what happens at the Far lands depends on the world. Sometimes it is a skygrid, and sometimes it is a plain ocean/bedrock with different biomes. The features of the Far Lands in other Bedrock ports remain unknown.

Caves generated close to the Far Lands sometimes have an edgy "zipper" consistency, with sometimes only every second block being hollowed out.

Edge Far Lands

Despite Y level 256 being the maximum build height, the Far Lands are still cut off at Y=128, although trees still generate normally. (as the terrain generator is limited to Y=128 despite the 256 height limit)

If fossils generate here, they usually generate in mid-air without touching any block.

Warm and lukewarm ocean biomes in the Edge Far Lands appear as a "desert-like" patch, without any water in it, while normal and cold oceans generate grass blocks. Shipwrecks and underwater ruins always generate above ground, sometimes higher than 128 on the Y-axis. Buried treasure sometimes generates without touching any block.

There are many distinct terrain types of Edge Far Lands, listed in the table below:

Repetitiveness

Usually, the Far Lands' appearance never seems to repeat. However, they start to become extremely repetitive and stretched horizontally, a great distance from the X or Z axis, with sections 12 blocks wide being repeated. There is a sudden change of the Far Lands terrain when the number of blocks from the axis exceeds 12,550,821 divided by a power of 2. This corresponds to when sections of the Far Lands terrain appear to recur more times. The periodicity of the Far Lands starts to become apparent at 784,426 or more blocks from the axis. Nearly perfect repeating occurs starting at around 3,137,705 blocks from the axis. Beyond 6,275,412 blocks from the axis, the sections appear to be symmetric, all the way to the Corner Far Lands. The Z Far Lands tend to look more repetitive than the X Far Lands for no apparent reason. Currently, there is no explanation for this, as in Java Edition Beta 1.7.3 the terrain stays the same. This happens on every Bedrock Edition of the game that generates them. (i.e. mobile, Nintendo Switch)

Nothingness

In the Far Lands with negative X coordinates, after the positive X coordinates degrade, and all the Far Lands in the Windows 10 Edition, the terrain stops generating entirely, resulting in there being nothing present aside from the ocean and the bedrock layer.

Certain structures are able to generate in this area. Several, such as desert temples, have elongated foundations when generated here. Jungle temples here do not have a foundation; they instead appear to float above the water. Fossils can generate underwater, but do not generate on the bedrock floor. Igloos generate underwater on the bedrock layer, replacing the bottom bedrock layer with stone bricks. Underwater ruins and shipwrecks always generate on the bedrock layer, and lava veins (with magma blocks, obsidian, and stone on top) still generate near the bedrock layer, often creating bubble columns. Buried treasure generates above water. Pillager outposts generate only the watchtower without any peripheral structure around it; however, although the pillagers fall into the void, new pillagers can spawn again and again (infinitely) in and around the watchtower. Village buildings generate on a floating platform of grass below them. Iron golems spawn without falling through the world, although they cannot move.

Desert wells, dungeons, abandoned mineshafts, and woodland mansions cannot generate here.

Mobs such as dolphins, cod, and salmon still spawn normally. Seagrass and kelp still generate on bedrock.

In the frozen ocean biome, the surface of the ocean still freezes, and icebergs can still generate. Polar bears can spawn without falling into the void.

Skygrid

Note: As of 1.16.0, the skygrid generates only in the Nether and the End. In the Overworld, all areas previously occupied by skygrid are instead occupied by nothingness. If the world was created before 1.16.0, the skygrid continues to generate in the Overworld, including new chunks.

In the Corner Far Lands, Far Lands with negative Z, and past the normal positive Z Far Lands, a 3D grid pattern of grass blocks appears instead of the ordinary stack/loop. Tall grass and trees generate on these blocks. This results in a perfect three-dimensional array of grass blocks levitating high above the ocean.[2] The name is a bit misleading, since the array of blocks extends not only up to Y=128, but also down to bedrock level. Structures generated here follow similar rules to that of the Nothingness with some differences:

  • Tall ice spikes can generate from sea level, reaching Y=128.
  • Igloos generate on Y=64, instead of the bedrock layer underwater.
  • Prior to Village and Pillage, villages generated here at high altitudes between 64 and 128 have tall foundations extending from the bedrock layer.
    • After Village and Pillage, villages generated in the skygrid generate at sea level, just like in nothingness.
  • Unlike in nothingness, woodland mansions can generate in the skygrid.

Effects

Bedrock Edition uses 32-bit floating-point numbers (as opposed to 64-bit on Java Edition). At any given coordinates, even near the world origin, attempting to move is impossible if it is too slow. At every power of 2, the "minimum speed" doubles.

The player's hitbox corners are stored individually in memory (as opposed to the coordinates of the actual player in storage). If the player is at a power of 2, the hitbox corners may move at different speeds, changing the size of the hitbox. These size changes are usually negligible, but can potentially be significant. In extreme cases, the player's hitbox size reaches 0, making it possible to fall through the world.[3]

  • Minor jitteriness can be first experienced at X/Z: ±16,384, noticeable if the player is moving slowly.
  • At X/Z: ±131,072, The jitteriness becomes noticeable when the player is sneaking. Climbing up ladders, vines, twisting vines and weeping vines while sneaking is slightly slower than normal if climbing by walking against a block. Lecterns and tripwire hooks started distorted. Sneaking diagonally starts to become bumpy. Lecterns and tripwire hooks start to become distorted. Lever will experience small distortion if the player is viewed full.
  • At X/Z: ±262,144, string tripwire become invisible. Most sunflowers start to render incorrectly. Climbing up ladders and vines while sneaking is even slower and less smooth. Sweet berry bushes and cobwebs appear slightly larger.
    Sea pickles render with slightly thinner stems than normal.
  • At X/Z: ±524,288, easily visible jitteriness is experienced and the further the player travels, the world gradually starts to become glitchy and unplayable.[4] It also becomes impossible to move forward or backward while in cobwebs past this point. Some blocks with 3D models render incorrectly, such as string, tripwire hooks, item frames, levers and lecterns. Painting can be placed multiple times on the same block. Some mobs was unable move at this coordinates.
  • Past X/Z: ±1,048,576, the jitteriness becomes considerably unbearable, making crashes frequent at this point on low-end devices. Most blocks with 3D models, including cacti, levers, torches and bamboo render incorrectly,[4] and become more distorted the farther out the player travels.
  • Past X/Z: ±2,097,152, Certain blocks that non-full blocks started quite distortion includes door, fence, iron bars, and more. Dropping item can fall through world on this coordinates.
  • Past X/Z: ±4,194,304, it is impossible to walk normally. Ender pearls, an elytra with fireworks, horseback, speed potions, and water are the only acceptable ways to travel from here onward. Sometimes players can fall through world when multiple coordinates not 0.5.
  • Beyond X/Z: ±8,388,608, every entity less than 1 block high or wide, including the player, falls through blocks. Since blocks still have collision detection from the sides (unless both coordinates exceed this value) Speed 8 allows players to walk past 8,388,608, but if they teleport past 8,388,608, they always fall through the world. Flying, elytra and horseback are the only ways to navigate past this point in Survival; thus, it is impossible to reach the Far Lands on foot. The stonecutter shas double blades on this coordinates.

Far Lands on Minecraft Bedrock Edition

The terrain errors initiate at X/Z ±12,550,821, like in Java Edition.

  • Between X: +12,561,029 and X: +12,758,546 the Far Lands begin to take on a thinner "shredded" appearance, before fading out into either a Nothingness state.
  • What generates from there to the beginning of the Stripe Lands (X/Z: ±16,777,216) is just ocean, with a floor of bedrock. The bedrock generates in a pattern identical to how it normally generates underground. Biomes still exist; swamps darken the water and cold biomes generate ice on the top layer of water. Generated structures, such as villages, witch huts, and jungle temples still generate here. The large blocks of land eventually phases out to become long thin strips and eventually dotted arrays of floating blocks, resembling a 1-dimensional cross-section of the skygrid.
  • At X/Z: ±16,777,216, the Stripe Lands begin to render. They are caused when the precision loss of the world causes 1 out of every 2 blocks to be considered "invalid".
  • X/Z ±30,000,000 is the maximum teleportation distance; any attempt to teleport farther puts the player back at this coordinate. Players who writes certain command on this coordinates with chat or command block will get an error message.
  • X/Z ±31,999,872 can be reached in the Overworld with the Nether by entering a Nether portal past X/Z ±3,999,984 in the Nether.
  • Beyond X/Z ±33,554,432 the "stripes" of the Stripe Lands disappear, leaving only vertical block rendering.
  • Beyond X/Z: ±67,108,864, it becomes impossible to manually travel using elytra with fireworks. However, it is possible to teleport using chorus fruit.
  • Generated structures like villages and ice spikes may continue to generate as far up to X/Z: ±134,217,728. However, they appear two-dimensional at this distance. In the Windows 10, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions, there is no limit to how far out structures can generate and they can be seen at distances of over 2 billion blocks.
  • Beyond X/Z: ±134,217,728, teleportation using chorus fruit is confirmed to be impossible. The only way to move beyond this limit is by using external tools.
  • At every power of two in the Stripe Lands, gaps between rendered blocks double. At X/Z ±1,073,741,824, blocks are 128 blocks apart and neighboring slices are invisible with a low render distance.

    Near X/Z: ±2,147,483,648, the game crashes, as this is the 32-bit integer limit. However, not all devices are able to reach this point. Increasing render distance on near coordinates can cause the world and game to crash.

Dimensions

The Far Lands of the Nether and End share characteristics of the Overworld Far Lands, although with some differences. They generate more similarly to each other than to the Overworld Far Lands.

The Nether

The Nether slime Lands are similar to the Overworld Far Lands, except generated with Nether terrain features, with a lava ocean at Y=31. Bastion remnants and ruined portals continue to generate. Bastions "float" on the lava, with their foundations at Y=29.[5]

The Nether can be a great way to reach the Far Lands in the Overworld, as every block in the Nether counts as 8 blocks in the Overworld. The player must travel to 1,568,853 or higher to spawn in the Far Lands. Teleporting just a few blocks less allows the player to see the beginning of the Far Lands.

The End

The End Far Lands are not of much interest, being made of almost exclusively end stone, and appear a bit more squashed and stretched horizontally than the Overworld Far Lands. Micro-end islands still generate inside the Far Lands, even after the latter dissipates. Since there is no signature liquid of the End, they just generate down to a dry void; similarly, there is no bedrock floor.

The End Far Lands are cut off at y=128, although structures still generate on top.

Cause

The terrain is generated based on 16 octaves of Perlin noise. Each noise generator takes floating-point inputs and uses those to interpolate between noise values at whole numbers. It does so by:

  1. Casting to a 32-bit integer, where the game rounds toward zero and handles overflow by picking the closest representable value;
  2. Subtracting one if the integer is greater than the original input, to always round down;
  3. Subtracting that integer from the original input to get a remainder in the interval [0, 1) suitable for interpolation.

It covers an interval of [−231, 231) without causing any problems. The problem is that many of the octaves cover a scale much smaller than a block, with up to 171.103 noise units per block. Indeed, 231 ≈ 171.103×12,550,824.053. Thus, the Far Lands start 12,550,824 blocks away from the center of the Minecraft world. Once this value is exceeded, the integer is always 231−1, thus breaking the generation algorithm.

At the positive end, the remainder starts relatively small but usually much larger than 1, and grows by 171.103 per block. At the negative end, the remainder starts at −232. This value is then adjusted by ((6x−15)x+10)x3 or in this case, ((6(12,550,824.053)−15)(12,550,824.053)+10)(12,550,824.053)3 ≈ 1.8685826 × 1036 for quintic interpolation. Even one block in at the positive end, this is already around 1011. The negative end starts all the way around −1049. For the Corner Far Lands, multiply the values of both edges. When interpolation (really extrapolation) is attempted with values as large as these, it produces similarly large output. That output completely dwarfs all other terms that would normally give the terrain its shape, instead effectively passing only the sign of this one noise function through.

There are several other factors to the cause of the Far Lands, making things slightly more complicated:

  • Noise is sampled only every four blocks and linearly interpolated in between. This is why when 12,550,824 is affected by the bug, it reaches out three more blocks to 12,550,821.
  • Each noise generator picks a random offset in [0, 256) to add to its input. This usually moves the boundary under 12,550,824, starting the Far Lands at 12,550,821. With a few seeds, it might not, putting the start at 12,550,825. Rarely, if the boundary is just barely within 12,550,824, the first couple blocks of the Far Lands might look somewhat normal. The southern and eastern Far Lands do this independently of one another. At the negative end, the Far Lands always start at block coordinate −12,550,825, with the positive edge of those blocks at −12,550,824.
  • There are actually two sets of noise generators, which are blended based on another noise generator. This is responsible for relatively smooth alternation between two sets of tunnels or plains. Occasionally, one of the noise generators starts generating the Far Lands before the other because it uses a different offset, producing an incongruous boundary.

== Obtaining ==

Minecarts can be retrieved by {{control|attack|text=attacking}} them for some time. Minecarts can also be retrieved with one attack from a [[pickaxe]] provided the player's attack cooldown is reset. A minecart is also destroyed if it makes contact with a [[cactus]], or if shot with a [[bow]] and arrow.

A minecart can be placed in the same manner as most blocks but can be placed only on top of a [[rail]]. Once placed, it may be derailed by pushing it off the end of the track. After this, it can be railed again by placing a rail directly below it or pushing it onto a track.

Minecarts can be ridden by {{control|use|text=pressing the "use" control}} on them. Once inside, an external impulse may be needed to make the minecart start moving. The player can slowly move the minecart forward while riding it, by pressing {{control|forward}}. If a mob walks in front of an empty minecart, it is pulled into the cart.

After rolling off of the end of a track, a minecart can be pushed around on open blocks. If a minecart is pushed onto or falls onto tracks, it "snaps" to those tracks. When riding a minecart, if the minecart lands on a rail, the player does not take any fall damage. <!--Minecarts and arrows don't interact anymore.-->

=== Dismounting ===
Players can exit the minecart by pressing {{control|sneak}}. When a player or mob dismounts a minecart, either by choice, by breaking the minecart, or by passing over an [[activator rail]], the minecart tries to find a safe ejection destination one block away. First it checks the eight horizontally adjacent blocks in the following order of priority relative to direction of travel: right, left, rear right, rear left, front right, front left, rear, front. A valid destination has a block underneath with a solid (not necessarily full) top surface and a space with enough headroom and width for the passenger to fit in when standing at the center. The space can even contain liquid or have open trapdoors if the mob is slim enough, and presence of other mobs doesn't matter. If no valid destination exists on same horizontal level, the minecart then checks the blocks one above, then one below. For a player, the minecart also checks for crawlable destinations. If still none, the minecart chooses its own location. Once the minecart picks a destination, it actually ejects the passenger one block up in the air and the passenger settles down on its own. Under a low ceiling this may cause one tick of suffocation damage. The air drop exists to allow passengers to land on carpet or bottom slabs.

=== Speed ===

Minecarts have a predefined speed limit of exactly 8 blocks per second ''per axis of travel''. A minecart traveling diagonally can, therefore, travel up to 11.314 blocks per second.<ref>The square root of 8<sup>2</sup> + 8<sup>2</sup>. See [[wikipedia:Pythagorean theorem|Pythagorean theorem]].</ref> When a minecart comes to a turn it moves diagonally across that turn.

[[Powered rail]]s powered by redstone give minecarts a boost of speed. Speed is gradually decreased if there are no powered rails to assist its movement, and an unpowered powered rail slows down a minecart rapidly. The speed decreases at a faster rate when going uphill, compared to when moving horizontally. A minecart does not need powered rails to assist its movement down a hill.
<!-- Is this comparison to real-life physics necessary? - One unit of kinetic energy could be defined as the energy gained by a cart going down a one-block slope and lost by a cart when it goes up a one-block slope. If a 45-degree downward slope is connected directly into an upward slope, an initial height of 60 blocks results in a final height of 40 blocks, a loss of 20 units of potential energy. But if 20 sections of flat track are inserted between the slopes, the final height is 35. Anything in the way of the minecart brings it to a stop. Once a minecart has left the track, it rapidly decelerates within one or two blocks. When mobs touch a minecart, they affect it in the same way a player would, i.e. mobs that move up against a still cart set it in motion.

If a minecart is moving fast enough, it can skip across one block without a track and reattach to track on the other side, at significantly reduced energy and speed. A minecart's hitbox can skip turns if the minecart is boosted using enough powered rails.<ref>{{Cite bug|MC|179971|Minecart skips turns if too fast|date=April 22, 2020}}</ref>

The speed and momentum of a minecart can differ depending on whether or not it is empty, and in the case where a minecart has a container, the speed can differ depending on the quantity and type of items inside.

=== Merged minecarts ===

{{IN|java}}, two or more minecarts can be merged by pushing them into each other so that they overlap. Merged minecarts move as a collective, like a train, and can be useful for long-distance transport because while moving in a straight line, they ''do not need powered rails to keep their speed''.

To summarize:

=== Distance traveled by empty carts starting on a downward slope ===

This table shows the distance traveled by an unoccupied minecart on a downward slope, with a boost (or no boost). The most efficient way is to use only 1 boost at the bottom of the incline on the flat surface. Using 2 increases distance by about 20% or 1.5 blocks. All distance trends based on the height seem to be logarithmic.

=== Collision ===

Minecarts are about the same size as a block (1×1). Because of this, a ladder, door, or trapdoor prevents it from falling down a 1×1 hole. Carts on [[rail]]s also ignore collision in certain situations. A cart traveling uphill, downhill, or on a curve with a block placed in front of it, goes through the block.<ref>{{Cite bug|MC|8004|Minecarts glitch through the stop block of a track that ends with a turn or a downward slope|date=January 20, 2013}}</ref>

A minecart that reaches the end of a rail up against an opaque solid block bounces back, but if the block is transparent then it stops. The minecart can even bounce against an opaque block from a standstill if the rail underneath is powered. A player or mob riding in a minecart does not collide with or suffocate in any transparent blocks but suffocates inside opaque blocks.

Due to the bug {{bug|MC-113871}}, [[boat]]s can be captured by minecarts. When a boat is placed in a minecart, the minecart travels faster on rails, approximately as fast as on powered rails. The movement in the boat minecart is glitchy and moving forward with the W key moves the cart backward relative to the player, and vice versa for moving backward with the S key. The minecart also moves on the rail-less ground at a crawling speed, but it does not float in the water despite being in a boat. 

Using this glitch can be far more resource-efficient since the boat minecart can move at the speed of a powered rail track on flat ground and on slopes. Another physics glitch with the boat minecart is the extreme reduction in friction when the minecart is on rails, which is similar to the lack of friction when a boat is riding on ice. This glitch can be done in Survival without cheats simply by pushing a minecart into a boat on the track. This bug is now patched.

* Minecarts appear to float above the track, as their model has no wheels.
* If the player views their inventory while riding in a minecart, they appear sitting down in mid-air.
* The player can teleport to another minecart while sitting in a minecart by right-clicking a minecart in their range. This can be used as an elevator to quickly rise up when minecarts are placed on top of each other.
* If the sound is muted in the options while riding a minecart, and then turned back up, the minecart no longer makes noise in the client until the player exits the minecart.
* If a saddled pig is riding a minecart, the player can ride the pig. Doing so causes the minecart to be able to ride freely at the player's walking speed. It is unknown whether this is a glitch.
* It seems that hunger does not deplete while inactive in a minecart (at least in normal difficulty).
* A minecart (alongside rails and powered rails) are used as Steve's Side-Special in the crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

A firework rocket can be used as ammunition for [[crossbow]]s, although it deals [[damage]] only if it has an [[explosion]] effect. A higher flight duration gives the firework rocket a longer range, and more damage is added per firework star. The [[Piercing]] enchantment has no effect on firework rockets shot from a crossbow.

{{IN|java}}, if a firework rocket shot from a [[crossbow]] hits an [[entity]], the rocket instantly [[explosion|explodes]], no matter the flight duration. Attempting to do this {{in|bedrock}}, however, results in the firework passing through the entity,<ref>[[bugtracker:MCPE-52675|MCPE-52675]]</ref> so the [[player]] must plan where to aim.

Once launched, fireworks fly out vertically, with random horizontal offset up to 5 blocks. {{IN|bedrock|java}}, fireworks can fly in any of the 6 directions a dispenser can point. After [[#Duration and direction|some time]], the firework explodes into a colorful explosion based on the effects of the [[firework star]]s added upon crafting, or no explosion if no firework star was used. If multiple firework stars were added to the rocket upon crafting, they all explode simultaneously.

The explosion of a firework rocket deals damage to mobs and players that are within 5 blocks and not obstructed by [[solid block]]s. The maximum damage of a rocket with one firework star is {{hp|7}}, with the damage decreasing with distance. Each additional firework star on the rocket adds {{hp|2}} points of damage, for a maximum damage of {{hp|19}} with 7 stars. Using commands to add additional firework stars results in more damage. The damage dealt is unaffected by any other ingredients used. The explosion does not destroy end crystals nor damage the Ender dragon, but does destroy armor stands.

If the explosion exceeds the (unmodded) [[particle]] limit of 16,384, the oldest particles are removed before displaying new ones, resulting in severely diminished firework quality / duration. At most a firework should have 3 trail stars, more than that could waste diamonds, firework stars, and other fireworks. Particle counts per star are:

Twinkle effect adds 2 particles to the count.

Like most other entities, they can be moved by [[water]] and [[explosion]]s, and teleported via [[portal]]s. They also cannot move through solid surfaced blocks, upon hitting one, they either move to a side or explode based on the duration. If a firework explodes under a block, its explosion is flattened.

=== Duration and direction ===

Fireworks travel different heights based on the amount of gunpowder added. The number is displayed as a tag on the item's tooltip with the description of "Flight Duration".

The height it rises is between 8 and 20 blocks with 1 gunpowder, 18 to 34 blocks with 2 gunpowder, and 32 to 52 blocks with 3 gunpowder. 
(Note: Using command blocks, firework rockets with higher durations go higher and keep accelerating with virtually no terminal velocity. If the duration is long enough, the firework rocket could reach heights of over 1,000,000 blocks and speeds of over 10,000 m/s in a matter of minutes. Such fireworks with significant X and Z motions speed up sideways exponentially and reach outside the world boundary in a matter of seconds.{{only|java}})

When spawned, <!-- server-side --> fireworks have a vertical speed of .05 and a random small X and Z speed (random value near zero with a standard deviation of .001).  Each firework also determines its lifetime in ticks by 10 × (number of gunpowder + 1) + random value from 0 to 5 + random value from 0 to 6, after which it explodes.  Each tick, the firework accelerates horizontally by multiplying its X and Z velocities by 1.15, and vertically by adding a constant factor of .04.

Fireworks can be made to travel different directions by being dispensed or launched under flowing water. The firework's direction combines with the flow of the water to go diagonally.

After successfully defending a village from a [[Raid]] the villagers may celebrate by setting off firework rockets.

== Boosting elytra ==
Fireworks can be used to boost [[elytra]] when in flight. Normally, elytra can glide for a short distance, but with the use of fireworks, the player can fly a long distance, gain speed, and take off from the ground. 

Simply using the firework rocket with elytra spread boosts the player in the direction the player faces. It can leave behind a trail sometimes.

Although fireworks with firework stars can be used, the player takes blast damage if they use it in flight. 

There are four types of rockets, with three types of flight duration. Higher flight durations mean longer boosts. {{IN|bedrock}}, the fireworks obtained from the Creative menu have a flight duration of 1, while {{in|java}}, the fireworks obtained in the Creative menu have a flight duration of 1, 2, or 3.

== Usage ==
A redstone comparator can be placed on the top of any [[opaque]] block with a solid full-height top surface (including upside-down [[slab]]s and upside-down [[stairs]]). {{IN|be}}, a comparator can also be placed on [[wall]]s and fences. For more information about placement on transparent blocks, see [[Opacity/Placement]].

The redstone comparator has a front and a back — the arrow on the top of the comparator points to the front. When placed, the comparator faces away from the player. The comparator has two miniature redstone torches at the back and one at the front. The back torches turn on when the comparator's output is greater than zero (the arrow on top also turns red). The front torch has two states that can be toggled by {{control|using}} the comparator:
* Down and unpowered (indicating the comparator is in "comparison mode")
* Up and powered (indicating the comparator is in "subtraction mode")

The redstone comparator can take a signal strength input from its rear as well as from both sides. Side inputs are accepted only from [[redstone dust]], [[block of redstone]], [[redstone repeater]]s, other comparators, and [[observer]]s in specific scenarios. The redstone comparator's front is its output.

It takes 1 [[redstone tick]] (2 game ticks, or 0.1 seconds barring lag) for signals to move through a redstone comparator, either from the rear or from the sides. This applies to changing signal strengths as well as simply to turning on and off. 

Redstone comparators check their power state before their scheduled ticks update. This results in redstone comparators not usually responding to 1-tick fluctuations of power or signal strength — for example, a [[clock circuit|1-clock]] input is treated as always off from the side, and always on from the rear. This happens because the signal changes back to its original state before the redstone comparator checks its input states. However, certain setups such as powering any input with two separate observer pulses at the same time will cause a redstone comparator to respond to 2 gametick pulses.

The redstone comparator has four functions: maintain signal strength, compare signal strength, subtract signal strength, and measure certain block states (primarily the fullness of containers).

Generally speaking, the comparator output signal strength represents the average fullness of the slots, based on how many of that item form a full stack (64, 16, or 1 for non-stackable items).

The ''Minimum Items for Container Signal Strength'' table (right) shows the minimum '''''full-stack-equivalent (FSE)''''' to produce different signal strengths from common containers. A '''''full-stack-equivalent''''' quantifies how many normal 64-stackable items are needed to output a corresponding signal strength. The 's' is a constant 64, with the additional amount needed following after.

One may also consider the terms: '''c''umulative-weight''''' or '''''weighted-sum''''' instead of '''''full-stack-equivalent'''''.

Items that stack to a max of 16  ([[snowball]]s, [[sign]]s, [[ender pearl]]s, etc.), contribute +4 to the ''full-stack-equivalent'' for each unity (count of 1 item). Similarly, items that stack to 1 ([[minecart]], [[boat]], etc.) contribute +64, and items that stack to 64 contribute +1.

Example 1: 3 ender pearls will contribute a 3 x 4 = 12 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 2: 16 ender pearls and 60 redstone dust contributes a 16x4 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 3: 1 minecart and 60 redstone dust contributes a 1x64 + 60x1 = 124 ''full-stack-equivalent''.

Example 4: To produce a signal strength of 10 from a hopper, one requires a ''full-stack-equivalent'' of at least 3s + 14 = 206 but strictly less than than 3s + 37 = 229. This can be done with 3 minecarts, and 14 dirt.

When a comparator measures a large chest or large trapped chest, it measures the entire large chest (54 slots), not just the half directly behind the comparator. A chest or trapped chest that cannot be opened (either because it has an opaque block, [[ocelot]], or [[cat]] above it) always produces an output of 0 no matter how many items are in the container — shulker boxes can always be measured, even if they cannot open.

Snowballs can be thrown by {{control|using}} them. There is no charging time or cooldown for firing them,{{Until|java Combat Tests}} meaning they can be thrown as fast as the player can click.

Like other projectiles, snowballs are affected by gravity: their range is the same as those of [[egg]]s and [[ender pearl]]s, less than that of [[arrow]]s fired from [[bow]]s, and more than that of [[splash potion]]s. In [[Bedrock Edition]], players will receive damage and will be knockbacked.

Snowballs deal {{hp|3}} each to [[blaze]]s but they deal no damage to other mobs. Mobs still receive knockback and act the same as if they were being damaged (for example, [[zombified piglin]]s who are hit by snowballs become aggressive). Players {{in|BE}} receive knockback, while players {{in|JE}} are unaffected.<ref>{{bug|MC-3179|||WAI}}</ref>{{Until|java Combat Tests}}

When fighting the [[ender dragon]], [[end crystal]]s are able to be destroyed by snowballs being thrown at them.

Snowball, like other projectiles, can be used to distract the [[warden]]. A warden walks towards the location where the snowball lands to inspect it, giving the player time to escape. However, if snowballs are fired too frequently (at least twice in 5 seconds), the warden walks straight to the player instead.

The world at excessive coordinates is not supported, and as such issues related to the Far Lands may not be fixed. This is because such issues would affect only players who intentionally teleport to high coordinates, and they are difficult to fix because they are a limitation of the game engine itself.[6]
