This is a list of Bedrock Edition 1.16.220 development versions.

beta 1.16.220.50

Beta 1.16.220.50 is the first beta version for Bedrock Edition 1.16.220, released on March 4, 2021,[1] which added the new mountain sub biomes[2] and re-added Glow Squid related features.

Dripstone Block
  • A decoration block.
  • Appears to be made of the same materials as stalactites and stalagmites but as a full cube.
  • Can be crafted from 4 pointed dripstone.
Glow Item Frame
  • Re-added to the game.

Mobs

Glow Squid
  • Re-added to the game.
  • Now emits the correct particles when being hit.

World generation

Biomes[3]
  • Mountain Meadow
    • The first layer of a mountain from the bottom.
    • The only biome not covered by snow, with flowers and sweet berries generates here.
    • Trees do not spawn here.
  • Mountain Grove
    • The second layer of a mountain, where rabbits spawn.
    • Mostly covered with Snow and Powder Snow.
    • Spruce Trees generates here.
  • Snowy Slopes
    • The third layer of a mountain, where goats spawn.
    • Mostly covered with Snow and Powder Snow.
    • This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it.
  • Lofty Peaks
    • One of the two possible fourth layers of a mountain, along with Snow Capped Peaks.
    • This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it.
    • Stone mountain, covered by a snow cap.
  • Snow Capped Peaks
    • One of the two possible fourth layers of a mountain, along with Lofty Peaks.
    • Ice, Packed Ice and Snow covering the whole mountain.
    • This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it.
Dripstone generation
  • Made up of primarily pointed dripstones and dripstone blocks, with large clusters of dripstone blocks hanging from the ceiling, pointed dripstone on the floor and ceiling, and many pools of water.
  • Currently added as a feature code file, does not generate in the overworld yet, and can only be generated using add-ons.

Death messages
  • Added death messages for being skewered by a falling stalactite
    • "<player> was skewered by a falling stalactite"
  • Added death messages for dying from falling on a stalagmite
    • "<player> was impaled on a stalagmite"

Sign
  • Re-added the ability to change sign text color using dyes.
Ores
  • Changed the textures to match Java Edition.
Pointed Dripstone
  • Now has the correct size and rotation when held in hand.
  • Now has the correct sounds.
  • Now has the correct hitboxes.
  • Are no longer destroyed by flowing lava.
  • Jumping on a Stalagmite will cause half hearts of fall damage.
  • Now drips water or lava into cauldrons if a source block is placed above the stalactite, and gradually fill the cauldron. Water drips even without any water above the block, but does not fill the cauldron.
  • Downwards facing dripstone in the nether will create lava particles instead of water particles.
  • Thrown tridents break pointed dripstone.
  • Changed item texture to match Java Edition.

World generation

Altitude
  • The world height is now extended from 256 to 320 blocks.
    • The lower part of the Overworld still borders at y=0.

Fixes

Performance and Stability
  • Fixed several crashes that could occur during gameplay.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when trying to rename a map on anvil while having its second slot occupied (MCPE-112905).
General
  • Powder Snow can no longer be placed in positions that already contain other blocks, such as Fence Posts or Iron Bars.
  • Glow signs are no longer unlit on DX11 and Mobile platforms (MCPE-117524).
  • Actor selectors no longer allow self selection with cheats disabled (MCPE-92635).
  • Projectiles now pass through Structure Void blocks (MCPE-103579).
  • Zombie, Zombie Villager, Husk, Pillager, Vindicator use correct bone to attach shields (MCPE-98606).
  • Mobs that pick up Shield now place it to their off-hand.
  • Visitors now drop inventory on death (MCPE-47563).
  • Improved placement rules for placing blocks on sides of Stair, Slab and Top Snow block.
  • Controllers are now able to select the "Button Mode" toggle in the Advanced Settings NPC screen in the Jurassic World pack (MCPE-66446).
Commands
  • Command block in a command block chain will list the correct amount of ticking areas when a new ticking area is added before listing.
  • Title command no longer duplicates % symbols in message (MCPE-51033).
  • Using teleport with execute command now uses the dimension of the origin for its operations (MCPE-44104).
Marketplace
  • The "Results" field for search within the marketplace inventory now updates properly between different sections within the screen.
Accessibility
  • Enabled screen narration with touch input on the new achievements screen.
  • Fixed a bug where Text-to-speech read the wrong text while using VR.
Villages
  • Villagers are no longer able to go through walls to sleep in a bed if the bed is adjacent to them.

beta 1.16.220.51

Beta 1.16.220.51 is the second beta version for Bedrock Edition 1.16.220, released on March 11, 2021,[4] which brought technical changes and fixes bugs.

GameTest Framework
  • Renamed all references of Actor to Entity.
  • Renamed BlockPos to BlockLocation.
  • Added startSequence in GameTest which allows finer control over advanced test sequences.
  • GameTest sequence callbacks no longer take tests a parameter as the initial test object now lives as long as the whole test.

Fixes

General
  • Sounds of ditching/collecting Powder Snow with bucket are now assigned to the correct sound categories (MCPE-111739).
  • Player no longer constantly emits particles when on fire after exiting Powder Snow (MCPE-111679).
  • Powder Snow block is no longer present in Creative Menu (MCPE-105407).
  • Fixed Drowned holding tridents backwards during attack (MCPE-118213).
  • Enabled "Find Friends" button on Xbox.
Performance and Stability
  • Improved input latency on Windows 10 when V-Sync is enabled (MCPE-98861).
Accessibility
  • Fixed a bug where UI screen reader didn't read out default controller focus and checkbox state on the Online Play is not Rated pop-up.
Technical
  • Updated behavior packs to require explicit module dependencies when using other native modules.
  • Identifiers within render_controllers will now be considered content errors if there is no render controller matching that name.
  • Entity json before version 1.16.100 will no longer give a content error for the deprecated field minecraft:foot_size.
  • Modified condition in "animation_controllers.json" to allow mobs to enter "wield_third_person_raise" (MCPE-118213).
  • Fixed an issue where loading into a world would cause continuous molang errors around "unhandled request for unknown variable".

beta 1.16.220.52

Beta 1.16.220.52 is the third and final beta version for Bedrock Edition 1.16.220, released on March 18, 2021,[5] which adds new lush caves blocks and changes the world generation downwards to Y=-64 behind experiments toggle.

Additions

Blocks

Azalea
  • Bush block which can be planted on dirt and grass blocks.
  • Has either no blossoms or purple blossoms.
  • Azalea can grow from moss blocks when bone meal is used.
  • Can be used as fuel.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Azalea Leaves
  • Has either no blossoms or purple blossoms.
  • Yield azalea and sticks on decay.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Cave Vines
  • A natural light source with a light level of 14 when it has berries.
  • Drop glow berries.
    • Berries appear using bone meal.
    • Berries can be harvested by interacting with the vine.
  • Grow from glow berries when placed on the underside of a block.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Dripleaf
  • Allows an entity to stay on it for 1.5 seconds (30 ticks), before the entity will fall through it.
    • The tilt happens in 3 stages: unstable, partial and full.
      • All the stages are solid except the full stage, which is when the player falls through.
      • When nobody is standing on it, it is set to none stage.
  • Comes in two sizes: small and big. Small can be applied bone meal to grow into big.
    • Small Dripleaf can only be obtained with shears (otherwise breaks), and can only be planted on clay or underwater on clay and dirt blocks.
    • Big Dripleaf can be obtained with any tool or by hand as well as breaking it using projectiles and can be planted on grass and dirt blocks.
  • The tilt can also be triggered by hitting the plant with a projectile.
  • The tilt can be prevented by powering it with redstone, but hitting it with a projectile still tilts.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Hanging Roots
  • Decorative blocks that can only be placed on the underside of a block.
  • Obtained with shears, otherwise breaks.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Moss Block
  • An opaque block with a grassy texture on all sides.
  • Can be bonemealed to grow grass, tall grass, moss carpets and both types of azaleas on it and in its vicinity.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Moss Carpet
  • Uses the same texture as the moss block, but one pixel thick.
  • Crafted with moss blocks.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Rooted Dirt
  • Decorative block with roots on its texture.
  • Similar to coarse dirt, neither mycelium nor grass spread to it.
  • Using a hoe turns it into normal dirt and drops a hanging roots.
  • Using bone meal on some will grow hanging roots underneath.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.
Spore Blossom
  • Can only be placed on the underside of a block.
  • Sends particles downward and around the spore blossom when opened.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.

Items

Glow Berries
  • Can be eaten to restore 2 (🍗).
  • Grow on cave vines.
  • Used to breed foxes.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.

World generation

Lush Caves generation
  • Currently added as a feature code file, does not generate in the overworld yet, and can only be generated using add-ons.
  • Adaptive to the environment: every type of cave generation can be a lush cave.
  • Moss covers the floors and ceilings, along with moss carpets and grass on the floors.
  • Spore Blossoms grow from the ceiling and drip particles.
  • Contains clay pools where dripleaf plants grow out of them.
    • Clay pools will sometimes generate water sources over air, and the water is suspended and does not flow. This has yet to be fixed.
  • Contains azalea bushes (both variants).
  • Cave vines with glow berries grow from the ceiling and light up the caves.

General

Particles
  • Added the electric_spark_particle, spore_blossom_ambient_particle, spore_blossom_shower_particle, and wax_particle particles.
  • Available under Experimental Gameplay.

Changes

Blocks

Block of Copper, Cut Copper, and variants
  • Waxing the block emits yellow particles.
  • Axes can now be used to scrape off wax and oxidation (one stage at a time).
    • Scraping off the wax from the block emits white particles.
  • Lightning can now clean oxidation, reverting the oxidation process by one or several stages.
    • Chances of cleaning and number of reverted stages are higher the closer to the struck block.
  • The Copper Block variant names are now changed to match Java Edition.
    • Renamed Copper Block to Block of Copper.
    • Removed the word "Block" from oxidized variants of Block of Copper, including waxed variants.
      • The IDs have also been updated.
  • Copper Blocks ID are no longer stored into block states and now split between waxed and oxidization stages.
  • Is now affected by the randomTickSpeed gamerule.
Copper Ore
  • No longer rotated vertically when placing.
Lightning Rod
  • Can now be waterlogged.
  • Now emits particles when in contact with rain.
Signs
  • Now has sounds for being dyed.

Mobs

Foxes
  • Eat glow berries.

World generation

World generation changes, with Bedrock layers going all the way down to y=-64 on the old chunks.
Altitude
  • Generation range and build limits have been expanded by 64 blocks down, to a total range of 384 blocks.
    • To allow old world to generate with the new build limits, old chunks will generate Bedrock layers all the way to Y=-64 to fill up the void gap between Y=0 and Y=-64.
Structures
  • Underground caves, canyons and structures now generate all the way down to Y=-64.

Fixes

General
  • Sign text is no longer invisible on older worlds (MCPE-119628)
  • Ink sacs and dyes now make sounds when used on signs (MCPE-117944)
  • Selecting featured offer on Profile Screen will properly redirect user to complete list of featured offers
  • Fixed non-guest split-screen players' lost data on Xbox (MCPE-55815)
  • Made the sign-in buttons text fit the button in Portuguese-BR
  • Use lighter color for text in Storage menu on Settings screen
  • Fixed an issue where button textures were scaled wrong when applying resource packs
  • Enabled navigating to the back button using only keyboard in some screens where it was not possible
  • Fixed bug where switching between profile causes all other previewed profiles to be overridden by the initial one

  • Piston and Sticky Piston are no longer appear black when Outline Selection is disabled (MCPE-53858)
  • Fixed fog in Nether biomes not rendering properly in some resource packs (MCPE-111680)
  • Glitchy lines are no longer visible on signs with text (MCPE-110321)
  • Fixed barrier bug where non full blocks were flashing due to barrier not writing the depth (MCPE-116767)
  • Non-persistent mobs no longer despawn immediately after loading into the Nether
  • Drowned will now swing their arm when throwing tridents
  • Fixed crash when entering a nether portal and throwing a bottle o' enchanting at the same time (MCPE-114793).
Character Creator
  • Steve pants no longer color the bottom of appearance's feet when no footwear is equipped
  • Users in multiplayer games should no longer see other players using pieces on their appearance that they do not own as Steve
  • Changing skins while in splitscreen should now properly save for all local users and update properly for remote users
  • Alex shirt no longer looks corrupted when equipped with different pants
  • "Hooray!" emote will now display in the emotes section if already owned (MCPE-111165).
VR
  • The death screen is now visible when behind full-screen effects (on fire, standing in a portal, etc) in VR
  • Fixed translucent rendering of occluded UI elements, including when viewing menus near blocks
  • Item aliases do not show up in autocomplete for duplicate items but commands can still succeed if the user runs the command with aliases.
