Beds allow the player to skip to the next dawn. In SMP, this will only happen when all players sleep. Beds were added in Beta 1.3 [1]. In a future update, the last bed the player slept in is planned serve as the player's respawn point the next time they die. Beds cannot be destroyed by fire.
Placement
Beds, unlike typical blocks, take up two blocks of space. Basic placement requires at least this much space away from the player's facing direction. Also, they expand outwards, so you need to place a bed with at least one block behind them. Like some other blocks, beds can not be placed on glass or snow but can be placed on leaves. It is also possible to create a "floating bed" if the blocks underneath the bed are destroyed. This allows beds placed over each other like with fences. When placed, the foot will face toward the user. Two or more beds can be placed next to each other, effectively allowing double beds.
Beds cannot be placed underwater. They can be placed in a dry area and then flooded, however using them will result in the "You can only sleep at night" message. In order for the bed to be useful, it must have enough light on and around it to prevent hostile mob attacks during sleep.
Beds are 9/16 of a block high, one more pixel than half; Beds, Cake, Soul Sand and Redstone Repeaters are the only blocks that are neither one block or half of a block high.
Behavior
Beds are used by right-clicking on the part with a pillow during night time. Attempting to use it during the day will result in a "You can only sleep at night." message, which also appears when attempting to use beds in the Nether. When used, the player is positioned in the bed and their view slowly fades to gray. After this transition, the player wakes up at dawn.
To ensure that you are not awakened unnecessarily during the night, the bed must not be placed along a 1 block thick wall, unless the area on the other side of the wall is also safe. If a hostile mob can get within 2 blocks of the bed, even if the blocks are separated by a wall, you will be awakened with the hostile mob standing next to you. There appears to be a slight delay before the mob attacks you giving you time to get the first blow.
In SMP, to skip the night, all players on the server must be in bed at the same time.
Sleeping, while skipping night time, does not accelerate other events such as the decay of dropped items, crop growth or smelting.
Crafting
Note: You can use any colored wool, you can even use multiple colors of wool, however, the bed will remain red.

Notes
Player's avatar during sleep
- Pressing the Inventory key quickly before entering your bed causes a glitch, the player will appear to be laying down in the inventory screen portrait.
- If the bed is surrounded on all sides by blocks, the player will not be able to sleep as a message appears saying "You can only sleep at night", denying the player access to the bed.
- When walked on, beds make a stepping noise like stone, suggesting that they are uncomfortable.
- In SMP, the player is given the option to "Leave Bed" or use chat to continue communicating.
- Using a bed in a room with a low ceiling can result in the player waking up with their head stuck, causing them to suffocate unless they can escape.
- Saving in a bed and then continuing that saved game causes the player to fall through the floor, and makes the bed "occupied". Destroying and replacing the bed fixes this.
- You may not sleep while F8 is toggled.
- Hitting the bed will cause the top surface to brighten. This does not affect the light level and is probably a glitch in the breaking animation.
- In SMP, if you try to sleep in an occupied bed you will get a message saying "This bed is occupied".
- Placing a bed next to cactus in SMP creates a detached headrest. This can be used to create heart shaped beds and benches.
- In SMP, if someone gets into a bed, then someone else surrounds the bed with something(i.e. cobblestone), when the player gets out of the bed they will be stuck in the laying down position.
- On peaceful mode, a bed can be used out in the open, because no monsters are present to interrupt your sleep.
- When a user right clicks quickly enough in Single Player, the message "This bed is occupied" will appear on the screen.
- In a new world, if you build a bed before the first night, and sleep in it as night just begins to fall, no monsters will have a chance to spawn. You can repeat this over and over, so long as you do it every evening. Animals still spawn normally, and enemy mobs can still spawn from mob spawners on the map. [unconfirmed]
- Another interesting note, If there are too many torches in a room with a bed inside of a cave, a message will appear 'You can only sleep during nighttime'. This can be resolved by taking away some torches, so that the room seems darker. However, you cannot try to sleep in a cave whilst it is daytime, even if the room is dark.
- Beds can be stacked on top of each other, forming a "Bunk bed", in a similar method to stacking fences.
- If you stand on a bed at night, you will get the message "You can only sleep at night".
- If you try to go to bed in SMP while you sneak, you will be kicked with "illegal stance" as reason.
