Beds allow the player to skip to the next dawn and will show the world slowly fading away (as shown in this Video). In SMP, this will only happen when all players sleep. In another later update, the last bed the player slept in will serve as the player's respawn point the next time they die.The item was added in the 1.3 Update [1][2][3] Like some other blocks, the bed can't be placed on leaves, glass or snow. However, on fast graphics, beds CAN be placed on leaves. You can also create a "floating bed" if you destroy the blocks beneath the bed.

WARNING: Placing a chest at the foot of the bed and using it crashes the game.

  • The bed is 1m*0.7m*2m and you can not walk onto it.
  • Trying to use it during the day, will give you a message saying "You can only sleep at night." This is the 2nd message to be displayed in Beta Single Player - the other is "Screenshot saved as ..."
  • Breaking the blocks under the bed will not destroy it.
  • Because of this, it's possible to put beds over each other like with fences.
  • Beds are not stackable in the inventory.
  • Beds will always have the foot-end towards the player when placed.
  • You can use any colored wool to make a bed. However, the bed will always be red.
  • You can't sleep while being attacked.
  • Sleeping in a bed will not affect Smelting.
  • There is a slight chance that a mob will spawn (even in well lit areas) after you fall asleep which will wake you up and start attacking you (except on peaceful).

The bed was added in Minecraft release Beta 1.3 [4]

The bed may only be used during the night, and when used you automatically go to the next day unless there is a possible way for a hostile mob to get to the bed's location. In that case, the player will wake up with a mob nearby and no time will have passed.

Trivia

When 1.3 was first released, every world generated started with a full stack of torches, a diamond pick, axe and shovel and 64 beds, separated into 1 and a stack of 63. This was later confirmed to be due to the debug item spawning code still being in place and was removed. [5]

If the player has a skin applied, sleeping will reset their skin to the default skin.

Time does not actually pass when in the bed it just sets it to morning as all entity's and smelting won't change.
