For the hunt room containing gold chests in Minecraft Dungeons, see MCD:Bastion Remnant.

Bastion remnants are large, castle-like generated structures found in the Nether in all of the biomes except basalt deltas. They generate in four distinct variants, each with a unique structure and set of loot. Piglins and piglin brutes spawn in these structures on generation, and hoglins may also spawn on generation in the bridge and hoglin stables variants. Bastion remnants are the only place to find gilded blackstone, the Pigstep music disc, the snout banner pattern and armor trim, the magma cube monster spawner, and the netherite upgrade smithing template.

Generation[]

Java Nether Structure Generation1

Nether structure generation in Java Edition. The black lines represent each region and the dots represent coordinates. Green is where they can generate and red is where they cannot.

Bedrock Nether Structure Generation

Nether structure generation in Bedrock Edition. The black lines represent each region and the dots represent coordinates. Green is where they can generate and red is where they cannot.

Bastion remnants generate in all Nether biomes except basalt deltas, although a bastion may extend into one. If a bastion tries to generate in a basalt delta, the bastion does not generate, leaving the region empty. To generate the structure, the game splits the Nether into regions, in which either a nether fortress or a bastion remnant can generate. The regions are 432×432 blocks in Java Edition and 480×480 blocks in Bedrock Edition. Each region has a 4-chunk separation located on the south and east borders of the region in which neither a fortress nor a bastion can generate. This leaves only a 368×368 block section in Java Edition or 416×416 block section in Bedrock Edition where a structure can generate. Two structures never generate in the same region, although they might overlap if they generate close to the separation border. In Java Edition, the chance of a bastion generating instead of a fortress is 35 (60%), while in Bedrock Edition the chance of a bastion generating instead of a fortress is 23 (66.6%).

Piglins, piglin brutes, and hoglins that spawn upon generation in bastion remnants neither despawn naturally nor do they hunt each other. Piglin brutes also spawn exclusively here upon structure generation, and do not despawn unless killed, or if difficulty is set to Peaceful in Java Edition (they remain in Bedrock Edition but become passive in Peaceful difficulty). Like shulkers in end cities, once these mobs are killed, they do not respawn, though the bastion continues to spawn normal mobs depending on the biome it is located in.

Structure[]

Bastion remnants generate as 4 types of structures: bridges, hoglin stables, housing units, and treasure rooms. Each type has its own set of structures that compose it. These structures may be supported by ramparts that contain cave-like paths. Piglins, piglin brutes, and hoglins spawn frequently throughout. Unlike nether fortresses, when over the lava ocean, they do not generate pillars of solid blocks down to the solid terrain beneath, but float above, entirely even.[1]

All bastion remnant structures found below are located in the folder client.jar/data/minecraft/structures/bastion.

File structure[]

Bridge[]

The bridge consists of a large ruined rampart structure with a piglin face carved into it. The inside of the "mouth" consists of multiple levels of walkways surrounded by lava. A damaged bridge goes out from the mouth, with a support pillar on the far side.

Hoglin stables[]

The hoglin stables consist of a three-part rampart with damaged hoglin stables on either side. Hoglin stables' pieces are contained in the subfolder hoglin_stable. They contain the hoglin stable chests.

Housing units[]

The housing unit consists of multiple ruined two-part ramparts arranged around a central courtyard with nether wart growing in the middle. Housing unit pieces are contained in the subfolder units.

Treasure room[]

The treasure room structure consists of a large rampart supported by buttresses, with a bridge going between it and the treasure room itself. The rampart contains several treasure chests and a handful of blocks of gold.

The treasure room consists of many bridges suspended above a lava floor. At the bottom of a treasure room, there is a magma cube monster spawner, and a center loot area consisting of blocks of gold, as well as 1 or 2 treasure chests. Additional chests generate in the bastion, but they use the "generic" loot table instead of the "treasure" loot table. Treasure room pieces are contained in the subfolder treasure.

The dragon's breath is a brewing item that is used solely to make lingering potions.

Obtaining
The dragon's breath can be obtained by scooping up the ender dragon's breath attack or the purple effect clouds caused by dragon fireballs in an empty glass bottle.

Usage
Brewing ingredient
Dragon's breath may be added to any splash potion to upgrade it to a lingering potion, which can be used to create a lasting area effect cloud, or to craft tipped arrows.

When put 2 or more dragon's breath in the brewing stand, after the brewing process, a glass bottle will drop as an entity. However, if put only 1 dragon's breath in the brewing stand, after the brewing process, the glass bottle is consumed and cannot be retrieved.

Paintings are decorative entities that hang on walls.

Obtaining
Crafting
Paintings can be crafted with any color of wool. The color of the wool used does not influence the picture chosen when the painting is placed.
Once placed, it displays a random painting.

Breaking
To remove a painting from a wall, the player can attack it, break one of its supporting blocks, cover one square of it with a block, hit it with an arrow, egg, ender pearl, snowball, or fire charge, or subject it to an explosion. The painting then drops as an item. Arrows that hit paintings disappear.

Trading
Master-level shepherd villagers sell 3 paintings for 2 emeralds.

Usage
Placement
Paintings can be placed on the sides of solid blocks, signs, banners, or sculk veins. A small gap is visible between the painting and attachment surface. There are several different sizes of paintings (see below). When placed, a painting checks for the largest amount of space it has. It then chooses a random painting of that size. The player can add blocks around the painting to ensure it is the size wanted. When the supporting blocks are removed, the painting breaks after 20 game ticks (1 second) if no supporting blocks are replaced during that interval.

Properties
Being an entity, paintings can simultaneously exist in the same space as blocks such as water or torches. Specifically, they can share the space with any block whose collision box does not intersect its hitbox.

Players and mobs are able to walk through paintings, as long as the blocks supporting the painting allow it. Secret doorways can be created this way. Light propagates through paintings as well.

If a player is concealed behind a painting, the player's name is also concealed from other players. Is this true in Bedrock?

Paintings are non-flammable.

Canvases
There are 26 paintings in the game. These are mostly based on paintings by Kristoffer Zetterstrand, who also created the Minecraft versions.

* On April 26, 2011, Notch stated that the automapping code can be used to share custom paintings and books in the future.
**The seeds for this world are -1044887956651363087 and -6984854390176336655 (both are the same), standing at X=-249.65, Y=91, Z=-29.04.
* The "Skull on Fire" painting's texture was added in Beta 1.3. However, the code for paintings to randomly display the part of the Kz.png texture that was to be occupied by the Burning Skull painting was added earlier, in Beta 1.2_01. As there was nothing on this part of the texture except for a purple background grid, this is what would be displayed if the painting was randomly chosen, until the Burning Skull painting texture was actually added.
* The original "Skull on Fire" painting was given to the winner of an official texture pack competition by Mojang.

Trading
Novice-level Shepherd villagers have a 40% chance to sell shears for 2 emeralds in Java Edition. This trade is always offered in Bedrock Edition.

Chest loot
shears

Usage
Shearing
Shears lose 1 durability when used to shear something.

Shears can be on a sheep to remove its coat and drop 1–3 wool of the corresponding color. The same sheep can be sheared again after it eats from a grass block to regenerate its coat.

Shearing a mooshroom drops 5 mushrooms of the corresponding color and irreversibly turns it into a normal cow.

Shearing a snow golem irreversibly removes its pumpkin, dropping it and revealing its face.

Shearing either a beehive or bee nest that is full of honey makes it drop 3 honeycombs and resets it to honey level 0. The same beehive or bee nest can be sheared again if it is able to reach full honey again. If sheared by hand without a campfire below the hive or nest all bees within will exit and all nearby bees will attack the offending player.

Dispensers can use shears in any of the above listed ways, interacting with any valid block or entity in front of the dispenser's face. This decreases the shears' durability. A dispenser shearing a beehive or bee nest will not anger bees or cause them to leave even if there is not a campfire below it.

Shearing a pumpkin turns it into a carved pumpkin, dropping 4 pumpkin seeds.

java, shearing the tip of cave vines, kelp, weeping vines, or twisting vines sets its age value to 25 and stops further growth.

Breaking blocks
Shears use 1 durability when is used to break any block, even if it breaks instantly by hand.

Shears can be used to harvest cobwebs, leaves, grass, tall grass, seagrass, tall seagrass, ferns, large ferns, dead bushes, nether sprouts, vines, glow lichen or hanging roots and obtain them in item form. They can also be used to break tripwire connected to a tripwire hook without activating it.

When shears are used to break weeping vines or twisting vines they are guaranteed to drop in item form instead of the usual 33% chance. This only applies to vines directly broken by shears and not vines that are broken due to the destruction of their supporting vines.

The following table shows information about blocks that can be broken with shears. Colors indicate what gets dropped when the block is broken:

*White: The original block.
*Blue: The block's normal drop (i.e. string, sticks, seeds, saplings, apples).
*Red: Nothing.

A carrot is a food item obtained from carrot crops that can be used to plant them, eaten or used as a crafting ingredient.

Carrot crops are planted in farmland and used to grow carrots.

Obtaining
Breaking
Fortune#Seeds
Fully grown carrot crops drop 2 to 5 carrots (3 per crop harvested on average). Yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with Fortune, with Fortune III harvesting an average of 5 carrots.

The yield is calculated by a binomial distribution: 2 drops are fixed, then a drop is attempted three times with a success rate of 57.14286% to yield the extra 0–3 drops. Each level of Fortune enchantment increases the number of attempts by one.

Natural generation
Village farm plots have a chance of having carrots. The exact chance depends on the style of the village:

Village style !! Chance
plains-village Plains || 30%
snowy-village Snowy || 10%

Mob loot
Zombies, husks, and zombie villagers have a 2.5% (1) chance of dropping either an iron ingot, carrot, or potato when killed by a player or tamed wolf. This is increased by 1% (1) per level of looting. This gives carrots the following chances of dropping:
* 1 (about 0.83%)
* 7 (about 1.17%) with Looting I
* 9 (about 1.50%) with Looting II
* 11 (about 1.83%) with Looting III

Chest loot
carrot

Usage
To eat a carrot, press and hold use while the carrot is selected in the hotbar. Eating a carrot restores 3 hunger and 3.6 hunger saturation.

Farming
Carrots can be farmed and harvested on farmland. Planted carrots take 8 stages to grow, and go through 4 visually distinct stages. Planted carrots require a light level of 9 or greater to continue growing. If the light level is 7 or below, the crops instantly un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant carrots if the light level is too low.

Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is hydrated. Using bone meal on crops also increases the speed of growth by randomly increasing their growth stage by 2 to 5.

Crops break if pushed by a piston or if their supporting farmland breaks or turns to dirt (i.e. by being trampled), dropping their usual drops.

If gamerule mobGriefing is <code>true</code>, rabbits will find mature carrot cropsje / carrot crops with growth stage greater than 1be. This reduces the growth stages by one, removing the crop completely when the growth stage reaches 0.

Breeding
Carrots can also be used to breed and attract pigs and rabbits.

Villagers can pick up carrot items to become willing, which allow them to breed. Villagers require 12 carrots to become willing.

Trading
Novice-level Farmer villagers have a 25% (1)bedrock or 40% (2)java chance to buy 22 carrots for an emerald.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Composting
Placing a carrot into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Suspicious stew is a food item that can give the player a status effect that depends on the flower used to craft it.

Obtaining
Bedrock, suspicious stew is the only food item in the game that can be obtained from the Creative inventory only by searching. However, it can be crafted and can also be found in shipwreck chests. Suspicious stew can be given with commands like give, but java, unless NBT data like that listed in the data values section is included, consuming it has no effect and still restores the same hunger points as a normal suspicious stew. In Bedrock Edition, giving the player a suspicious stew through commands causes the stew to choose an allowable status effect at random.

Harvesting
Suspicious stew can be obtained by "milking" a brown mooshroom with a bowl after using a small flower on it. When a small flower is used on a brown mooshroom, the brown mooshrom produces a suspicious stew related to that small flower the next time it is milked with a bowl. Red mooshrooms do not produce suspicious stew. The brown mooshroom returns to producing mushroom stew until fed another small flower.

Crafting
Suspicious stew is not listed in the recipe book. However, it can be quickly assembled by clicking the mushroom stew recipe and adding one small flower to it.

Chest loot
suspicious-stew

Mob loot
After being given a flower, a brown mooshroom can be "milked" for suspicious stew by using a bowl on it. The flower type determines the stew's effect using the same rule as a crafted stew. Milking a red mooshroom after feeding it a flower does not yield a suspicious stew specific to that flower.

Trading
java, expert-level farmer villagers can offer either 1 or 2 suspicious stew trades, each stew for one emerald.

bedrock, expert-level farmer villager offers to sell suspicious stew for one emerald as well.

The trading interface does not indicate the type of suspicious stew being sold, but each trade entry consistently yields the same type of stew, so the player can remember or make a note of the types offered by a given villager, such as "this villager's first stew gives blindness, and their second entry gives saturation".

Usage
Food
Tutorials/Hunger management
To eat suspicious stew, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 hunger and 7.2 hunger saturation and gives a few seconds of a status effect that varies depending on which flower was used to craft it. The effect is not displayed in the tooltip, texture, etc., meaning that the player cannot know in advance what the effect is without knowing which flower was used.

The bowl is emptied and returned to the player after the suspicious stew has been eaten, and can be re-used to craft more stews. Unlike most foods, suspicious stew can be eaten even if the player's hunger bar is full.

The Saturation effect effectively makes those two stews a superfood: In those 6 or 7 ticks it can restore up to 6(7) hunger and 12(14) saturation points on top of their food value, for a total of at least 12 hunger, and effectively maximizing saturation. This is the largest amount of hunger and saturation the player can get from a single food item. Regeneration can restore up to 3 health, and Poison or Wither can inflict up to 4 damage.

Consuming suspicious stew is the only way to obtain the Saturation and Blindness effects in vanilla Minecraft without the use of commands.

beta 1.17.10.21The loot of Bastion Remnants has been changed, generally making more valuable items more common and in larger quantities.

Trivia[]

Abandoned jigsaw test 1

bastion/jigsaw_test in Bedrock Edition.

Abandoned jigsaw test 2

Signs in bastion/jigsaw_test.

  • The structure bastion/hoglin_stable/starting_pieces/stairs_1_mirrored, despite containing the word "mirrored", it is not stored as mirrored like the other mirrored stairs. This has no effect on generation due to the placement of jigsaw blocks in the structure.
  • In Bedrock Edition, there are multiple unused structure files. Unlike the unused structures in Java Edition, these structures are more technical.
    • Two files named bastion/units/wall_units/edge_0, and bastion/treasure/ramparts/lava_basin contain blocks that have not been added to the game, including blackstone_bricks, blackstone_brick_stairs, cracked_blackstone_bricks, and chiseled_blackstone_bricks.
    • A test structure file, bastion/jigsaw_test, contains two oak signs, some jigsaw blocks, stained glass, and stone.
  • Buried sections can exist within the bastion and alongside it. Ore may generate alongside or within netherrack, but glowstone blobs can do so within its air.
  • Ghasts can spawn in the treasure room if the room is in the correct biome, leading to a surprising ramp-up in difficulty.
