The Badlands (previously called Mesa) is a rare Biome added in update 1.7, consisting mainly of Red Sand, Terracotta and five of its different color variations.

This biome is similar to a Desert, but with a few variations. The vegetation is made up of Dead Bushes and cacti in the low-lying areas, and Oak Trees in two variations. The badlands are also one of the only places to find coarse dirt. The topography can range anywhere from flat, to canyons, to tall spires of terracotta. The badlands contain no passive mobs.

As of update 1.10, Mineshafts generate commonly on the surface in this biome, they are made out of Dark Oak Planks instead of normal oak planks, and Gold Ore can now be found at surface level (Y:64), with the same abundance as Iron Ore.

The badlands biome currently has 5 different variations: the badlands plateau, the eroded badlands, the modified badlands plateau, the wooded badlands plateau and the modified wooded badlands plateau.
