Not to be confused with Bad Luck.

Bad Omen is a status effect that causes a raid to appear when an afflicted player enters a village. This does not apply to any other mob with the effect if the mob is in a village.

Getting Bad Omen

Bad omen can be inflicted only on players and tamed wolves when they kill an illager captain (except those that spawn in raids in Java Edition). A tamed wolf killing an illager captain gives their player the bad omen effect. Other mobs that kill an illager captain do not get the effect, although they can still get the effect via commands, but cannot start a raid when in a village. This also goes for any other illagers that kills an illager captain, including arrows shot by a pillager or an illusioner.

An iron golem that kills an illager captain does not receive the bad omen effect.

Effect

In Java Edition, Bad Omen's potency determines the chance for illagers to be equipped with enchanted weapons when the player triggers a raid by entering a certain radius around a bed that a villager has claimed. If the raid results in player victory, the Hero of the Village's potency equals the Bad Omen's potency (capped at level 5). Bad Omen levels past the first also give a single extra raid wave, given the difficulty level. For example with Bad Omen II-V in Easy difficulty has four waves instead of three, Normal difficulty has six waves instead of five, and Hard difficulty has eight waves instead of seven.

In Bedrock Edition, regardless of Bad Omen level, it always has the same effect. It does not trigger raid mobs getting enchanted weapons or an extra wave.

Bad Omen Bedrock Animation

The Bad Omen effect animation activating in Bedrock Edition. Obtaining the effect in Java Edition does not start the animation, but acts like getting another effect.

Once the player gets the Bad Omen effect in Bedrock Edition, an animation similar to the one displayed when dying with the totem of undying appears, showing the effect's symbol rotating on the screen.

Bad Omen is a status effect and can be removed through all conventional methods, such as drinking milk, dying or waiting until the effect eventually expires.

The player can still receive the bad omen effect in peaceful difficulty via commands (all illager captains despawn in peaceful), but does not trigger a raid if in a village.

Causes

Cause Potency Length Notes
Raid captain I 1:40:00 If the outpost captain is killed by a player or tamed wolf.
Raid captain I–V[note 1] 1:40:00 If the patrol captain is killed by a player or tamed wolf.‌[Java Edition only]
  1. One level is added each time a patrol captain is killed, capping at level Five.

Immune mobs

Only boss mobs are immune to Bad Omen; however, only players and tamed wolves can trigger raids, other mobs with bad omen while in a village do not trigger a raid.

Trivia

  • If the player leaves a village during a raid, receives Bad Omen, and returns to the village, the effect is removed but does not affect the existing raid.
  • A player cannot receive Bad Omen when indirectly killing a Patrol Captain. This includes burning with fire or lava, thorns damage, drowning, explosions, and suffocation, among other things. This also includes killing a captain with fireworks shot from a crossbow.
  • If the player kills a captain while in a village in Bedrock Edition, the animation, raid bar, and Bad Omen effect appear simultaneously. The effect disappears immediately after, then "flashes" again approximately 1 second later.
