Axolotls are tameable neutral mobs.

Spawning

Axolotls currently do not spawn naturally in the world, being only available from buckets or spawn eggs in the Creative inventory.

Variants

Axolotls come in five different varieties: cyan, gold, lucy (pink), wild (brown), and blue. The first four varieties are equally common, while the blue variety is rarer. Specifically, the blue variant has a 11200 (~0.083%) chance, giving the common varieties a 11994800 (~24.98%) chance individually.

Behavior

Axolotls are neutral to players, only attacking players if an axolotl is attacked first. If a player kills a mob that an axolotl is in combat with, the regeneration effect is applied for some seconds and mining fatigue is removed.[note 1]

Axolotls are always hostile to fish and squid and attack these mobs on sight. Axolotls can be commanded to attack drowned, guardians, and elder guardians when tempted with tropical fish by a player. On the other hand, axolotls are passive to these hostile mobs when not actively commanded by the player. Drowned, guardians, and elder guardians are always hostile to axolotls.

As axolotls are aquatic mobs, they take extra damage from tridents with the Impaling enchantment.

If an axolotl takes near fatal damage, it pretends to be dead, dropping to the ground and gaining the regeneration I effect. Monsters will ignore recovering axolotls.

On land, axolotls try to move to the nearest water source because they die outside of water after 5 minutes (6000 game ticks). Axolotls do not die on land if it the weather is rain or thunder. By collecting them in a bucket, players can tame and lead them around. The tamed axolotl is passive to the owner.

Breeding

Main article: Breeding

Adult axolotls can be led and bred with tropical fish or buckets of tropical fish. After breeding, a baby spawns and the parents cannot breed again for 5 minutes, while a player receives 1–7 experience.

Beetroot seeds are items that can be used to plant beetroot crops.

Beetroot crops are planted in farmland and used to grow beetroot and beetroot seeds.

Obtaining
Natural generation
Village farms have a chance of growing beetroot. The exact chance depends on the village:

Village style !! Chance
desert-village Desert || 20%
plains-village Plains || 5%

Breaking
Harvesting fully-grown beetroot yields from 1 to 4 seeds per crop harvested (2 seeds per crop harvested on average). The Fortune enchantment can be used to improve the drop rate.

Chest loot
beetroot-seeds

Trading
Beetroot seeds are sold by wandering traders for one emerald.

Usage
Farming
Beetroot seeds can be placed on farmland. After being placed, it goes through four stages of growth. When fully grown it can be broken to produce beetroot seeds and beetroots.

<!-- Java Edition only? -->While beetroot crops have only four growth stages compared to eight for wheat, carrots, and potatoes, each growth tick has a 1 chance of not advancing the growth stage and therefore beetroot grows slightly faster than other crops.

Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is hydrated. One application of bonemeal has a 75% chance of advancing growth by one stage. This is less effective than for other crops: an average of 5 are needed to fully grow beetroot compared to 2 for other crops.

Breeding
Like other seeds, beetroot seeds can be used to breed chickens, lead chickens around, and make baby chickens grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

Taming
Like other seeds, beetroot seeds can be used to tame parrots.

Composting
Placing beetroot seeds into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Trading
Wandering traders may offer to sell beetroot seeds for one emerald.

Trivia

  • Axolotls are small Mexican salamanders which are critically endangered, following Mojang's trend of adding endangered species such as giant pandas and bees into the game for awareness purposes.
  • Their regeneration abilities allude to their real-life regeneration capabilities, which are of major interest to science.
  • There's a bug where if the Axolotls get placed from a bucket, the Axolotls can change their variant.
  • Axolotls are the first amphibian mobs implemented into Minecraft.
    • However, it was not the first announced one since frogs were announced at MINECON Live 2019.
  • Blue is the only color variant of axolotls that are not based on real life.
  • While being picked up in a bucket, the player will still get the advancement "Tactical Fishing".
