Axolotls are tameable neutral mobs.

Spawning

Axolotls do not spawn naturally in the world, being only available from buckets or spawn eggs in the Creative inventory.

Variants

Axolotls come in five different varieties: lucy/leucistic (lilac), wild (brown), gold (yellow), cyan albino (light blue) and rare (blue).

The first four varieties are equally common, while the blue variety is rarer.

Behavior

Axolotls attack fish, squid, drowneds, guardians and elder guardians. If an axolotl takes near fatal damage, it pretends to be dead, dropping to the ground and gaining the regeneration I effect. Monsters will ignore recovering axolotls.

Axolotls are neutral mobs, only attacking players if an axolotl is attacked first. As axolotls are aquatic mobs, they take extra damage from tridents with the Impaling enchantment.

If a player kills a mob that axolotl is in combat with, the regeneration effect is applied for some seconds and mining fatigue is removed.

On land, axolotls try to move to the nearest water source because they die outside of water after five minutes. Axolotls won't die on land if it's raining or thundering. By collecting them in a bucket, players can tame and lead them around. The tamed axolotl is passive to the owner.

Breeding

Main article: Breeding

Axolotls can be led and bred with tropical fish. After breeding, the parents cannot breed again for 5 minutes. Players holding buckets of tropical fish also attract axolotls.

Upcoming Java Edition
1.17Tropical fish also have assigned names that can be seen after capture. In Java Edition, the smaller text under the item name is displayed showing the fish name, similar to the text that displays enchantments under enchanted items. In Bedrock Edition, the item name is displayed showing "Bucket of <fish name>". Their colors are mostly named according to the colored block names, though with a few exceptions:
  • White
  • Silver
  • Gray
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Lime
  • Green
  • Teal
  • Sky
  • Blue
  • Plum
  • Magenta
  • Rose

The base color comes first, and if the pattern color is different, it comes after that. Lastly, the fish bucket is given a name according to the shape and pattern of the fish:

Flopper Glitter Betty
Stripey Blockfish Clayfish
Tropical Fish Patterns
Kob Snooper Brinely
SunStreak Dasher Spotty

Some tropical fish don't follow the normal naming system, and instead, reference real-life fish species. Apart from these names, these types of fish aren't different from regular tropical fish in terms of design or behavior.
