Axolotls are passive aquatic amphibian mobs.

Spawning

Axolotls do not spawn naturally in the world, being only available from buckets or spawn eggs in the Creative inventory.

Variants

Axolotls come in five different varieties: cyan, gold, lucy (pink), wild (brown), and blue. The first four varieties are equally common, while the blue variety is rarer. Specifically, the blue variant has a 11200 (~0.083%) chance, giving the common varieties a 11994800 (~24.98%) chance individually.

Axolotls picked up and re-spawned with a bucket will not preserve their color.[1] Baby axolotls picked up and re-spawned with a bucket will not preserve their growth stage and turn into an adult stage.

Behavior

Axolotls are passive to players. Axolotls are intended to give Regeneration and remove Mining Fatigue when a player kills a mob that an axolotl is in combat with;[2] however, this currently does not work.[3]

Axolotls are always hostile to fish and squid and attack these mobs on sight. Axolotls will only attack drowned and guardians when tempted with tropical fish by a player. Drowned and guardians will always attack axolotls on sight.

As axolotls are aquatic mobs, they take extra damage from tridents with the Impaling enchantment.

If an axolotl takes damage, it may pretend to be dead, dropping to the ground for 200 game ticks (10 seconds) and gaining the Regeneration I effect if in water. Monsters will ignore recovering axolotls. For an axolotl to play dead, the damage must not be from drying out on land, and there is a random 23 chance for the axolotl to not play dead. In addition, if either a random integer from 0–2 (inclusive) is less than the amount of incoming damage, or the axolotl's health before the damage is dealt is less than 50% of its maximum health, it then plays dead. Internally, they will not attempt to play dead if the damage will kill them, though this has no effect since the axolotl will die either way.

On land, axolotls try to move to the nearest water source because they die outside of water after 6000 game ticks (5 minutes). Axolotls do not die on land if the weather is rain or thunder.

Axolotls can be attached to leads.

Breeding

Main article: Breeding

Adult axolotls can be led and bred with tropical fish or buckets of tropical fish. After breeding, a baby axolotl spawns and the parents cannot breed again for 5 minutes and 1–7 experience is spawned. The baby axolotl has a 11200 chance to be the rare blue variant; otherwise, one of the parents' variants will be selected at random.

Mushroom stew is a food item.

Obtaining
Harvesting
Mushroom stew can be obtained by “milking” a mooshroom with an empty bowl. This is accomplished by using a bowl on a mooshroom. The bowl gets replaced by the mushroom stew item. There is no cooldown for doing so.

If a stack of more than one bowl is used on a mooshroom, only one bowl is consumed, and the mushroom stew goes into an empty inventory slot, or is dropped if the player's inventory is full.

Crafting
{{Crafting

Usage
To eat mushroom stew, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 hunger and 7.2 hunger
saturation.

The bowl is returned to the player empty after the mushroom stew has been eaten, and can be reused to craft more, similarly to rabbit stew and beetroot soup.

On the base of <code>ancient_city/city_center/city_center_2</code>, a single golden apple is contained in the chest. Eating it at that location unlocks the piston doors to the redstone labs beneath.
golden-apple

Usage
To eat a golden apple, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. It restores 4 points of hunger and 9.6 hunger saturation.

Unlike most foods, golden apples can be eaten when the hunger bar is full.

The golden apple provides:
*Absorption I for 2 minutes (providing points of absorption health)
*Regeneration II (1 every 25 ticks, × 0.4 per second) for 5 seconds (long enough to heal 4 points of damage)

Curing zombie villagers
Zombie Villager#Curing

A golden apple and a potion of weakness can be used to convert a zombie villager into a regular villager.

Horses
Golden apples can be used for improving the chances of taming a horse by 10%, for breeding and leading horses, and for speeding up the growth of baby horses by 4 minutes.

Piglins
Piglin are attracted to golden apples. They run toward any golden apples on the ground, and inspect it for 6 to 8 seconds before putting it in their inventory. However, piglins do not eat golden apples (or any food).

Trivia
Prior to Java Edition Beta 1.8, the golden apple outwardly restored the player's full 20 health points; Internally however, it is set to restore over double that, at 42 health points. This is most likely a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, making it restore (the meaning of) life, 42 (health points). This is far before either the Absorption or Health Boost effects, causing this reference go unnoticed.

Trivia

  • Axolotls are small Mexican salamanders which are critically endangered, following Mojang's trend of adding endangered species such as giant pandas and bees into the game for awareness purposes.
  • Their regeneration abilities allude to their real-life regeneration capabilities.
  • Axolotls are the first amphibian mobs implemented into Minecraft.
    • However, it was not the first announced one since frogs were announced at MINECON Live 2019.
  • Blue is the only color variant of axolotls that are not based on real life.
  • A green variant was shown during Minecraft Live 2020, however it is not present as of 20w51a
