"Netherite ore" redirects here. For the ingot, see Netherite Ingot.

Ancient debris is an extremely rare ore found in the Nether, and is the main source of netherite scraps. Its high blast resistance makes it immune to normal explosions. In item form, it floats on lava and cannot be burned by any form of fire.

Obtaining

Natural generation

Ancient Debris Spawn Rate Per Layer

Ancient debris spawn rate per layer; Y=15 has the most ancient debris. Average only.

Ancient debris generates in the Nether in the form of mineral veins. Up to two veins may generate per chunk: one vein of 1–3 ancient debris attempts to generate with a periodic normal distribution (similarly to lapis lazuli ore) from levels 8 to 22, and an additional vein of 1–2 ancient debris attempts to generate randomly from levels 8 to 119. On average, Y-level 15 has the most ancient debris.

There is an average of 1.65 ancient debris blocks per chunk[needs testing], with a normal maximum of 5. However, it is technically possible for up to 11 ancient debris to be found in a single chunk; adjacent chunks can generate veins on the border with up to 2 blocks spawning in an adjacent chunk. As of Java Edition 1.16.4, on average they generate 1.56 ores per chunk. Given this number, and that there are 65536 blocks in a chunk (16 * 256 *16), there is approximately a 0.002% chance that any randomly selected block will be an ancient debris block.

Ancient debris never generates naturally exposed to air and can replace only netherrack, basalt, and blackstone.[note 1] It may also generate alongside smaller pockets of lava.

Breaking

Ancient debris drops as an item if mined by a diamond or netherite pickaxe. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing.

Wheat seeds (java) or seeds (bedrock) are items obtained by breaking grass, or more abundantly harvested from wheat crops, and are used to plant them.

Wheat crops are planted in farmland and used to grow wheat and wheat seeds.

Obtaining
Breaking
Harvesting fully-grown wheat crops yields from 1 to 4 seeds per crop harvested (about 2 seeds/crop harvested on average).

Wheat seeds can be obtained from breaking all variants of grass, which yields 0 to 1 seed. If harvested with a Fortune enchanted tool the drop rate from grass is increased.

The looting is calculated by a binomial distribution: a drop is attempted three times with a success rate of around 57% to yield the 0–3 drops. Each level of Fortune enchantment increases the number of attempts by one.

Wheat seeds can be placed on farmland by right-clicking, where they grow through eight stages. When left alone, wheat seeds planted on farmland grow to become wheat crops, which can be harvested by the player. Planted seeds require a light level of 9 or greater to continue growing. If the light level is 7 or below, the crops instantly un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant seeds if the light level is too low.

Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is hydrated. Using bone meal on crops also increases the speed of growth by randomly increasing their growth stage by 2 to 5.

Breaking the final stage produces 1 to 4 wheat seeds (or more with Fortune) and 1 wheat. If they are harvested early, they drop 1 seed without any wheat. Crops break if pushed by a piston or if their supporting farmland breaks or turns to dirt (i.e. by being trampled), dropping their usual drops.

Breeding
Like other seeds, wheat seeds can be used to breed chickens and reduce the remaining growth duration of baby chickens by 10%. Chickens also follow a player holding wheat seeds.

Taming
Like other seeds, wheat seeds can be used to tame parrots.

Composting
Placing wheat seeds into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1. A stack of wheat seeds yields an average of 2.74 bonemeal.

Usage
Food
To eat rabbit stew, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 10 hunger and 12 hunger saturation. This restores more hunger than any other food type in the game except cake, but has less saturation than a golden carrot, a cooked porkchop, or a steak.

Eating rabbit stew leaves the player with an empty bowl, similar to mushroom stew, suspicious stew, and beetroot soup.

Wolves
bedrock, rabbit stew can be used to feed wolves, healing them by . However, unlike other wolf food, rabbit stew does not speed up the growth of baby wolves, and it cannot be used to breed them. It is usable only on a wolf that has less than full health.

Trivia
* If the ingredients of rabbit stew were eaten separately and the mushroom had become half of a mushroom stew, they would restore a total of 16 and 19.2 saturation points. Without counting the mushroom, the separate ingredients would restore 13 and 15.6 saturation points. Therefore, crafting rabbit stew results in a net loss of restorative points, though it is quicker than eating all the ingredients separately.
* Rabbit stew restores more hunger and total food points (hunger + saturation) than nearly any other single item (the exception is a suspicious stew with Saturation). This is balanced by the point that the stew does not stack, and with its complex recipe it's not so easy to make "on the road". The suspicious stew shares the unstackability, but with only four ingredients it can at least be crafted in the inventory.

Trivia

 • Despite ancient debris' rarity, emerald ore is actually rarer; emerald ore has a lower spawn chance per chunk, and while ancient debris can appear in veins as large as five in any Nether biome, emerald ore generates only as individual ore blocks in mountain biomes.
 • The texture of the ancient debris is supposed to look like pressed metal plates.[1]
 • Ancient debris yields the most experience of any item when smelted.
 • Ancient debris is actually what remains of the mining activity of the piglins, who extracted all the original netherite ore.[2]
 • Ancient debris does not generate exposed to air, but can sometimes be seen on the surface when it generates adjacent to a fungus or twisting vines.
 • Ancient debris is the only ore that does not use the same texture on all six sides.
 • It is possible to find veins of up to 20 contiguous ancient debris - up to five debris can generate in a chunk, so if a vein of five generates in adjacent corners of four different chunks, a vein of 20 debris would be created.

Notes

 1. The generation system explicitly attempts to place ancient debris where it is not exposed to air. Rarely, ancient debris can be exposed by later generation processes. It can also be exposed to fungi.
