The Adventure mode is a game mode intended for adventuring in which the player cannot place or destroy blocks.
Once the player changes their game mode to adventure mode the player can no longer place or destroy blocks. The player can still interact with blocks that have toggle-able states: doors, levers, buttons, etc. The player can also still deal damage to mobs and trade with villagers. In snapshot 12w22a its still possible to craft in adventure mode both with the 2x2 crafting grid in the player's inventory and with the full sized 3x3 crafting table. If the ability to craft in adventure mode will be retained in future versions is uncertain. The player can still interact with chests, dispensers, crafting tables, furnaces and brewing stands.
The main problem with adventure mode at this time is that the player cannot destroy objects such as Wheat or Sugar cane. This makes it difficult to survive in an adventure map. The only way the player can get food is by killing Mobs or trading with Villagers. It is also possible, in case of emergency, to jump on the Wheat that grows in NPC villages to destroy it.
It is recommended to activate the "Bonus chest" function that was implemented in Snapshot 12w16a, to have useful materials at the beginning of the game (such as a sword).
Although it is impossible to destroy blocks manually, it remains possible to use a creeper to destroy trees and stone, to get some resources. This technique, however, is dangerous since food can be difficult to acquire.
Since it is impossible to place or destroy any block, it is useless to craft tools other than weapons (and shears to obtain wool, since some villagers will trade emeralds for it).
A configuration file may be added in the future so that map-creators may choose if players are allowed to use/place/break a block/item.[citation needed] Also, adventure mode may disable difficulty options like Hardcore mode.[citation needed]

History
Adventure mode, formerly Dungeons and Levers, was announced by Notch on July 7, 2010.[1] Adventure mode may include permadeath like in Hardcore mode, making it rogue-like in nature.[2]
The main reason for this game mode is so people can properly play adventure maps or mazes legitimately without the ability to break blocks to cheat. This will also be a game mode in multiplayer servers so certain players can be assigned it or for use with multiplayer adventure worlds.[1]
Adventure Mode was officially added in Snapshot 12w22a, accessible through the cheats command, /gamemode <playername> 2. In snapshot 12w22a it's still possible to craft in adventure mode both with the 2x2 crafting grid in the player's inventory and with the full sized 3x3 crafting table.
