Adventure Mode was officially added in Snapshot 12w22a.
In snapshot 12w22a once the player changes their game mode to adventure mode the player can no longer place or destroy blocks. The player can still interact with blocks that have toggle-able states, such as doors levers and buttons. The player can also still deal damage to mobs and trade with villagers. In snapshot 12w22a its still possible to craft in adventure mode both with the 2x2 crafting grid in your inventory and with the full sized 3x3 crafting table. If the ability to craft in adventure mode will be retained in future versions is uncertain. The player can still interact with chests, dispensers, crafting tables, furnaces and brewing stands.
The main purpose of the game mode is so people can properly play adventure maps or mazes legitimately without the ability to break blocks to cheat. This will also be a game mode in multiplayer servers so certain players can be assigned to the gamemode or for use with multiplayer adventure worlds.[1]
The main problem with adventure mode at this time is that the player cannot destroys objects such as Wheat or Sugar cane. This make it difficult to survive in a adventure map. The only way the player can get food is by killing Animals or trading with NPC. It is also possible, in case of emergency, to jump on the Wheat that grows in NPC villages to destroy it.
It is recommended to activate the "Bonus chest" function that was implemented in Snapshot 12w22a, to have useful materials at the beginning of the game (such as a sword)
Although it is impossible to destroy blocks manually, it remain possible to use a creeper to destroy trees and stone, to get some resources. This technique, however, is dangerous since food can be difficult to acquire.
The player should be aware that, since it is impossible to place or destroy any block, it is useless to craft tools or Crafting table.
