Adventure Mode was officially added in Snapshot 12w22a.

In snapshot 12w22a once the player changes their game mode to adventure mode the player can no longer place or destroy blocks. The player can still interact with blocks that have toggle-able states, such as doors levers and buttons. The player can also still deal damage to mobs and trade with villagers. In snapshot 12w22a its still possible to craft in adventure mode both with the 2x2 crafting grid in your inventory and with the full sized 3x3 crafting table. If the ability to craft in adventure mode will be retained in future versions is uncertain. The player can still interact with chests, dispensers, crafting tables, furnaces and brewing stands.

The main purpose of the game mode is so people can properly play adventure maps or mazes legitimately without the ability to break blocks to cheat. This will also be a game mode in multiplayer servers so certain players can be assigned to the gamemode or for use with multiplayer adventure worlds.[1]

Features

  • Blocks cannot be placed or destroyed.
  • Interaction with mechanisms as well as trading is allowed.
  • Adventure Mode will most likely work in Multiplayer.
  • It is possible (in later versions)that Mobs will be fixed in Hard Mode.
  • Since Snapshot 12w22a, you can access this gamemode in Cheats, by typing /gamemode <playername> 2
