Items are objects which only exist within the player's inventory and hands - which means, they cannot be directly placed in the game world.
Some items, when used, place a block or entity version of themselves into the game world. Put simply, they are an item when in the inventory, and a block when placed. For example, boats turn into an entity when placed, and beds turn into a group of blocks when placed. When selected in the hotbar, items briefly display their names above the HUD.
The only method by which items can be properly displayed within the game environment is with the use of item frames.

Some items are manufactured through most of the raw materials listed above.
Potions inflict status effects on players and mobs.
Food items are used to feed the player in order to get hunger points and saturation. Some food items may inflict status effects on the player, be they positive or negative. Food items can also be used to restore the health of tameable mobs (including horses and wolves), and to make passive mobs (including pigs and cows) breed.
Most plants can be planted, grown, and harvested for food. The growth of plants can be accelerated with bone meal.
Dyes are a set of 16 items used to change the color of wool, leather armor, hardened clay, certain mobs, banners and glass.
Tools are utilized for a variety of purposes, mainly to help players harvest food and minerals.
These tools help players navigate and understand the world around them.
Weapons are mostly used to do damage and/or hinder mobs (and other players).
Vehicles allow players, mobs, and even some blocks to move in a much more efficient fashion.
Utility items are used for a wide variety of specific purposes that are helpful to the player.
Decorations are used only for aesthetic purposes.
These items can only be accessed within the Creative mode inventory.
These items can only be accessed with the use of commands, such as
